In the aftermath of a strange earthquake, an entire elementary school vanishes, leaving nothing but a hole in the ground. While parents mourn and authorities investigate, the students and teachers of find themselves somewhere far away...somewhere cold and dark... a lifeless, nightmarish wasteland among which their school stands like a lone fortress. As panic turns to terror, as the rules start to fall apart, a 6th-grade boy named Sho and his friends must try to survive in a hostile new world...

L'actrice Izumi Wakakusa, surnommée " la sainte éternelle ", voit sa beauté décliner suite à l'apparition de rides et d'une horrible tâche sur son visage. S'accrochant de toutes ses forces à la moindre lueur d'espoir, elle conçoit un plan avec l'aide de son médecin personnel, le docteur Murakami. Peu de temps après, elle donne naissance à une fille. Puis elle disparaît brusquement, et personne n'entend plus parler d'elle. Les saisons passent... Quelque part dans une ville, une mère et sa fille vivent ensemble. Aula alla deriva

Rêveur au tempérament singulier, le jeune Satoru, en dernière année d'école primaire, se distingue un peu de ses copains et suscite souvent leur moquerie. Un soir, son père, qui travaille dans une petite usine de quartier, annonce qu'un robot va intégrer l'entreprise. Obnubilé par l'idée de le rencontrer, Satoru va pouvoir réaliser son rêve à l'occasion d'une visite scolaire organisée par son école. Il fait ainsi la connaissance du robot Monroe, mais aussi de Marine, en visite avec un autre groupe scolaire. Dès le premier regard, Satoru et Marine ressentent une étrange proximité, à l'intensité inexplicable. Ils vont prendre l'habitude de se retrouver pour aller jouer avec le robot...
