Skæbnefortælling om en ung piges smertefulde kamp for at udtrykke sig og finde sin plads i et ubarmhjertigt elitært miljø. En far forærer sin datter en violin, da hun fylder fem. Det bliver begyndelsen på en livslang rejse ind i musikkens verden. Turen går via Mozarts Salzburg, Chopins Katowice og alle de klassiske koryfæers Wien. Violinen vokser fra børnestørrelse til voksenstørrelse og metronomen slår hurtigere og hurtigere, mens professorerne bliver strengere og strengere. Skalaer, bueteknik, triller og glissandoer, dag ud og dag ind. Men jo mere pigen øver sig på violinen, jo koldere bliver dens toner.
