English summary: This volume focuses on communication of legitimisation in the course of changes of rule and sovereignity. Different approaches discuss relevant situations, which are well suited to investigate the respective dimension of the topic. The time span covers investigations from ancient to contemporary history. Thus, the term of liberty as category of political legitimisation in the Late Roman Republic and Early Roman Empire is focused as well as the legitimisation of rule in the speeches of Appian and Cassius Dio. Concerning early modern times, the issues range from political language during the French wars of Religion and at the diets of Schleswig and Holstein in the 17th and 18th centuries to the use of symbols and political concepts in the Helvetic Republic, conditions for legitimisation for the new ruler in Salzburg and Wurzburg as well as the regional political culture in Dithmarschen in early 19th century. The essays about jubilees and anniversaries of rulers in the German Empire and the question about the Empire as organism or mechanism are based within modern and contemporary times. These epoch-spanning essays become reflected in a linguistic analysis of political strategies. German description: Im Mittelpunkt dieses Bandes stehen Herrschaftsumbruche, die unter dem Blickwinkel eines veranderten Herrschafts- und Politikverstandnisses auf ihre sprachliche und symbolische Vermittlung untersucht werden. Dabei reicht der Bogen der epochenubergreifen Beitrage weit: Themen sind der Freiheitsbegriff als Kategorie politischer Legitimation in der spaten romischen Republik und fruhen Kaiserzeit, die Herrschaftslegitimation in den fiktiven Reden bei Appian und Cassius Dio, die politische Sprache wahrend der Hugenottenkriege sowie auf den Landtagen in Schleswig und Holstein im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert, die Symbolnutzung und politischen Konzepte im helvetischen Einheitsstaat, die Legitimationsbedingungen fur den neuen Herrscher in Salzburg und Wurzburg sowie die regionale politische Kultur in Dithmarschen im fruhen 19. Jahrhundert, Herrschaftsjubilaen und Herrschergeburtstage im deutschen Kaiserreich und die Frage nach dem Reich als Organismus oder Mechanismus in der Weimarer Republik. Die Beitrage werden in einer sprachwissenschaftlichen Analyse politischer Strategien kritisch reflektiert.

This volume forms the proceedings of the Fifth Annual Symposium of the Assyrian and Babylonian Intellectual Heritage Project held in Innsbruck in 2002. Twenty-nine specialist contributions focus on the economic aspects of the `diffusion and transformation of the cultural heritage of the ancient Near East'. Eight thematic sections discuss: Near Eastern economic theory; Mesopotamia in the third millenium BC; Mesopotamia and the Levant in the first half of the first millennium BC; Levant, Egypt and the Aegean world during the same time span; Greece and Achaemenids, Parthians, Sasanians and Rome; social aspects of this exchange, including its affects on religion, borders, education and cosmology. The scope of the papers is wide, with subjects including Babylonian twin towns and ethnic minorities, archaic Greek aristocrats, the Phoenicians and the birth of a Mediterranean society, slavery, Iron Age Cyprus, Seleucid coins, the `Silk Route', and Greek images of the Assyrian and Babylonian kingdoms.
