Exhibition Max Ernst, a Retrospective

Max Ernst (1891-1976) is one of the few incontrovertibly great artists of the twentieth century. This book provides a unique opportunity of assessing Max Ernst's achievement. The extensive plate section includes works in all medias and genres -- painting, sculpture, works on paper, book illustration -- and from all periods of the artist's career. In his introductory essay, Werner Spies reviews the artist's oeuvre, pointing to certain basic attitudes and procedures that informed all his work. Essays by other well-known scholars discuss the symbolism of his Surrealist imagery, the influence of Romanticism and of the North American Indians on his work, and his ties with England. Max Ernst's own 'Biographical Note', lavishly illustrated with documentary photographs and further examples of his work, and interspersed with other writings by the artist, provide profound and fascinating insights into his life and art. Twenty-four years after his death, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen is paying homage to the artist, educator and political activist Joseph Beuys (1921-1986) in Düsseldorf, the city with which he is primarily associated. Often the object of intense debate and much hostility during his lifetime, today Beuys ranks among the 20th century's most important and most innovative figures of the artistic avant-garde and is often mentioned in the same breath as Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol. This companion book shares the exhibition's goal of displaying "the complete Beuys" by presenting selected works from all phases and artistic media of his multifaceted œuvre.

"Formulated in 1434 by Leon Battista Alberti, the notion that a painting is like an open window influenced generations of painters. At the start of the twentieth century, the window, reduced to its framework, was employed as a motif and a symbol in order to test the function of painting as a means of reproduction. To the degree that the window is empty, its painted depiction denies us a perspective of the world. With Fresh Widow, the replica of a French window whose panes are covered in black leather, Marcel Duchamp postulated a farewell from illusionist painting in 1920. At the same time, it marked a new beginning.
