This book presents a critical history of the intersections between American environmental literature and ecological restoration policy and practice. Through a storying—restorying—restoring framework, this book explores how entanglements between writers and places have produced literary interventions in restoration politics. The book considers the ways literary landscapes are politicized by writers themselves, and by conservationists, activists, policymakers, and others, in defense of U.S. public lands and the idea of wilderness. The book profiles five environmental writers and examines how their writings on nature, wildness, wilderness, conservation, preservation, and restoration have variously inspired and been translated into ecological restoration programs and campaigns by environmental organizations. The featured authors are Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862) at Walden Pond, John Muir (1838–1914) in Yosemite National Park, Aldo Leopold (1887–1948) at his family’s Wisconsin sand farm, Marjory Stoneman Douglas (1890–1998) in the Everglades, and Edward Abbey (1927–1989) in Glen Canyon. This anonymous eighteenth-century reviewer demonstrates why a pre-existing literary tradition is so important for authors. If, however, the ‘works of our predecessors’ refers solely or predominantly to the works of men, from what literary tradition does a modern female author draw? The lack of literary ancestors for Portuguese women has resulted in a culture dominated by the works of men, in which the few women writers struggle for success. The level of marginalisation experienced by Portuguese women in particular is indeed higher than that of other women when one considers the effects of the censorship laws of the Estado Novo dictatorship. The traditionalist and conservative views of a Roman Catholic State frowned upon women as authors and it wasn’t until the Carnation Revolution of April 25th 1974, which overthrew the regime, that women were to have the chance to write freely.

The theme of loneliness comes as part of the package. The ways in which the narrative incorporates it, however, are as varied as the narratives themselves.

Indeed, her first novel Perto do Coração Selvagem (1944) “impôs-se à atenção da crítica pela novidade que a densidade psicológica” (Nunes: 1989, p.11) This ‘psychological density’ continues into the author’s later works, including her short story collection Laços da Família (1960). The thirteen stories invite critical attention for various reasons but it could be said that critics tend to focus on the existential aspect and the stories’ similarity to the works of French authors Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus. While this is a legitimate line of enquiry, an equally interesting focus might involve an examination of the techniques used to convey ‘a profound journey into the psychology of her mainly female characters’. Techniques such as stream-of-consciousness writing and the literary epiphany are employed to great effect in three stories in particular: Devaneio e embriaguez duma rapariga, A imitação da rosa and Preciosidade. The collection in question does include two stories featuring male protagonists but Laços certainly consists mainly of female characters, which is in keeping with Clarice’s tendencies (Fitz: 1980, p.59). In fact one could maintain that all of her female characters share certain similarities; the one exception is seemingly age which varies from each story to the next. Ingrid Muller claims that they are all “with one notable exception, middle-class women in an urban environment” (1991, p.35), against which one might argue that there is more than one notable exception; with regards to the three aforementioned stories, however, this is an accurate observation. Nevertheless, a more significant linking factor is the portrayal of the inner workings of the characters’ minds.

Consequently, many comedies revolve around family dramas and Molière’s "Le Tartuffe" is no exception. The entertaining family drama in this case concerns the man Tartuffe’s attempt to manipulate and undermine Orgon and his family. It cannot be denied, therefore, that there exists an attempt to undermine the family, and that the schemer is Tartuffe himself. Mikhail Bulgakov condemns the character to be “...the most complete and consummate swindler, liar, scoundrel, informer and spy – a hypocrite, lecher, and seducer of other men’s wives.” It is clear that Tartuffe is an immoral man and at the very least partly, if not quite completely, responsible for the family’s misfortunes.

Here Santos has described one of the defining characteristics of the text. Perhaps this mix of elements is a contributing factor to Sussasuna’s universal popularity – the undeniably comedic elements, except those relevant only to a Northeast Brazilian audience, are certainly entertaining in any language. Maybe the ‘serious message’, which could indeed reasonably be said to form the ‘heart of the play’, is as well so universal in nature that it addresses any audience. In order to access this message, however, the audience must at first be entertained and subtly educated. I would argue that the comic elements, though obvious, are integral to this process, rather than existing as an inferior technique ‘despite’ which the moral can be communicated.
