David Herbert Lawrence (1885-1930) was an English novelist, poet, playwright and literary critic, one of the key writers of the early twentieth century, most famous for his criticism of rationalism and industrialization. Set in the Nottinghamshire, England, The Rainbow follows three generations of the Brangwens, a strong and energetic family, deeply attached to the land they own. The book focuses on the individual’s struggle against the confi ning rules and restrictions of social life.

David Herbert Lawrence (1885-1930) was an English novelist, poet, playwright and literary critic, one of the key writers of the early twentieth century, most famous for his criticism of rationalism and industrialization. “The Boy in the Bush” is a novel made in collaboration with an Australian writer Mollie Skinner. Set in Western Australia, the book covers a few years in the life of Jack Grant, who has been sent by his parents to make a new life in the pioneering colony. The book also masterfully covers the topic of juvenility and relationships with women.

This is the story of Lady Constance Chatterley, or ‘Connie’, her loveless marriage to Sir Clifford Chatterley, a man rendered both physically and emotionally crippled and impotent by the First World War, and her love affair with their gamekeeper, Mellors, a unique character who has deliberately retreated from opportunities for social and economic advancement and returned to his working class roots. The story is completely character-driven, which is why its grand themes of the immutability of the class divide, the dangers of championing the mind over the body and the fundamental human need for true ‘connexion’ with other human beings are almost never jarring.

Lady Chatterley's Lover

The Virgin and the Gypsy is a short novel (or novella) by English author D. H. Lawrence. It was written in 1926 and published posthumously in 1930. Today it is often entitled The Virgin and the Gipsy which can lead to confusion: first and early editions had the spelling Gypsy. The tale relates the story of two sisters, daughters of an Anglican vicar, who return from overseas to a drab, lifeless vicarage in the post-First World War East Midlands. Their mother has run off, a scandal that is not talked about by the family. Their new home is dominated by a blind and selfish grandmother along with her mean-spirited, poisonous daughter. The two girls, Yvette and Lucille, risk being suffocated by the life they now lead at the Vicarage. They try their utmost every day to bring colour and fun into their lives.

Inspired by Maurice Greiffenhagen’s painting “An Idyll,” and narrated in the fi rst person by a character named Cyril Beardsall, “The White Peacock” is a novel that tells the story of Lettie Beardsall, involved in a love triangle with George and Leslie Temple. It also has a strong emphasis on a theme of the damage in relationships caused by mismatched marriage.
