150 jaar geleden, in 1865, verscheen ALICE IN WONDERLAND voor het eerst, en inmiddels is het boek niet meer weg te denken uit de wereldliteratuur. Het klassieke verhaal van Lewis Carroll steelt nog steeds de harten van jong en oud. Lewis Carroll is het pseudoniem van de Engelse wiskundige Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898). Dodgson was een Engelse diaken in de Anglicaanse Kerk, wiskundige en logicus maar is vooral bekend geworden door zijn kinderboeken. Wanneer Alice een wit konijn volgt, in een konijnenhol tuimelt en dwars door een spiegel gaat, komt ze in een wereld terecht waar de grens tussen fantasie en werkelijkheid is verdwenen. Het verhaal leest als een lange, absurde, chaotische droom waarin een jong meisje een ontdekkingsreis maakt door een vreemdewereld, bevolkt door een heleboel wonderlijke wezens.

Cette édition présente les deux principaux récits de Lewis Carroll, Alice au pays des merveilles (1865) et De l'autre côté du miroir (1871), qui en est la suite. Le premier est l'histoire d'un rêve : animaux fantastiques, changements de taille, animation d'objets, toutes les ressources du merveilleux s'y déploient. Dans le second, plus moderne encore, la petite fille accomplit un voyage «derrière le miroir», dans un pays fabriqué comme un échiquier, et où elle devient une figure dans le rêve d'un rêveur, avant d'être la reine du jeu d'échecs. Alice est en vérité un voyage initiatique, qui permet de découvrir le monde, et soi-même.

“So many out-of-the-way things had happened lately, that Alice had begun to think that very few things indeed were really impossible.” When Alice catches a glimpse of a smartly-dressed talking rabbit on the riverbank, she follows him into a rabbit hole, tumbling down after him into a deeply bizarre subterranean world inhabited entirely by anthropomorphic beings. As she wanders through these strange new lands trying to get back home, she encounters a varied cast of characters, from the mischievous Cheshire Cat to the quite possibly insane Mad Hatter, to the wise, hookah-smoking Caterpillar, and they are all just as curious about her as she is about them. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland explores themes of growing up, mortality, and curiosity through the unique, innocent perspective of a child.
