Denne episke romanen veksler mellom to tidsplan. Vi møter Sharla, en fem år gammel mulattjente som blir forlatt av sin hvite mor. Hun plasseres hos den svarte, eldre kvinnen Addy, som blir som en bestemor for Sharla. Tilbake i tid blir vi kjent med Addys tragiske forhistorie og årsakene til at hun bor i en campingpark. I nåtiden tar en alvorlig syk Addy med seg Sharla tilbake til hjembyen Rusholme. Her avdekkes nye hemmeligheter og spørsmålet er om de to endelig har kommet hjem. Dette er Lori Lansens andre bok oversatt til norsk. I 2010 kom Aldri alene.
