Lou Andreas-Salome, eine der außergewöhnlichsten Schriftstellerinnen der Jahrhundertwende, verfasste Romane und Gedichte, aber auch zahlreiche Rezensionen und wissenschaftliche Artikel. Sie bewegte sich in den Künstlerzirkeln ihrer Zeit und tauschte sich intensiv mit Nietzsche, Wedekind, Hauptmann und Rilke aus. Lou Andreas-Salome verstand es, sich zeitlebens Wissensdrang und Unabhängigkeit zu bewahren. Ihre Begegnung mit Freud führte sie später zur Beschäftigung mit der Psychoanalyse. Der Band enthält die beiden Erzählungen "Fenitschka" und "Eine Ausschweifung" aus dem Jahr 1898. Lou Andreas-Salome setzt sich dort mit dem Thema Ehe und ihrer zur damaligen Zeit einschränkenden Bedeutung für eine intellektuelle und unabhängige Lebensweise von Frauen auseinander.

Beide Novellen handeln von modernen Frauen, die sich in einem Zwiespalt zwischen Liebe, Wünschen, Sehnsüchten und einem selbstbestimmten Leben befinden. Dieses Thema hat bis heute Nichts von seiner Aktualität verloren.

Ruth ist die erfolgreichste Publikation von Lou Andreas-Salomé, es ist die Geschichte des Mädchens, das sich mit ihrem unbändigen Lerndrang einen Platz im Herzen des Lehrers erobert und am Ende doch enttäuscht wird. This English translation of Friedrich Nietzsche in seinen Werke offers a rare, intimate view of the philosopher by Lou Salome, a free-thinking, Russian-born intellectual to whom Nietzsche proposed marriage at only their second meeting. Published in 1894 as its subject languished in madness, Salome's book rode the crest of a surge of interest in Nietzsche's iconoclastic philosophy. She discusses his writings and such biographical events as his break with Wagner, attempting to ferret out the man in the midst of his works. Salome's provocative conclusion -- that Nietzsche's madness was the inevitable result of his philosophical views -- generated considerable controversy. As a psychoanalyst and author, Lou Andreas-Salome traverses the mystery of sexuality in much of her work. This book, comprised of two texts originally written for adolescents, uniquely explores sexual education and the collision of sexuality and religion across the lifespan.The first piece, "Three Letters to a Young Boy" (1917), is a psychoanalytic fairy tale. The letters offer an interesting version of the evolution of sexual knowledge from childhood through adolescence. The second piece, "The Devil & His Grandmother" (1922), merges sexuality with religion, encapsulating three ages of woman child, to a lost soul and the Devil's bride, to the Devil's Grandmother. Written in charmingly convoluted dialogue, this work has a cinematic, fanciful feel. Both pieces dispense with academic formality and point to a relaxed new phase in Salome's writing life. Interestingly, this tone can also be detected in her blossoming correspondence with Sigmund Freud, which contrasts starkly with her sombre letters to Rainer Maria Rilke.It is with the spirit of free thinking demonstrated in these two selections, perhaps informed by Salome's experimentation with free association, that the reader is transported to a new theatre of Salome's imagination.

She travelled in a highly romantic world as socialite, sociologist, and author. She was part of Georg Simmel’s salon, the most exclusive in Berlin, frequented by elusive poet Stefan Georg, dramatist Paul Ernst, social theorist and polymath Max Weber, and Georg Lukács, among others. Salomé’s unique contribution to the erotic was that she argued sexual difference ran deeper than economics and equality—the politics of Marx and the ideals of the French Revolution. For Salomé, to think about women and their erotic nature, you must start with their biological and psychological difference, not their economic situation. Salomé was an outstanding theorist. Her books on Nietzsche and on Rilke are major studies. The field of psychoanalysis would not have developed in the way it did without Lou Andreas-Salomé. We cannot understand Freud’s "rationalism" or his anti-religious sensibility without Salomé’s writings. This new English translation is an essential text of psychoanalysis, one that shaped the very conception of the field.

The author of these two novellas, Lou Andreas SalomÈ, is not as well known through her own writing as through her friendships with such men as Friedrich Nietzsche, Rainer Maria Rilke, Sigmund Freud, Martin Buber, et al. and on whom she had significant influence. As one of the first women to study at a European university, her relationships with men differed vastly from those of other women of her time, and one might count her among the avant-garde of the women's movement. Fenitschka, the first of the two stories in this volume, is based on an experience in Lou SalomÈ's life which gave rise to the libretto of the better known of two operas, Lulu by Alan Berg. The second opera entitled Deviations was written only a few years ago by the Italian composer and conductor Guiseppe Sinopoli. Whereas the first work bears only a very slightóand less than favorableóresemblance to the character of this exceptional woman, the second, though not a chronological account of her life, captures her spirit much more faithfully and once again bears witness to the fact that she aroused and stimulated the creativity of those whose lives she touched.
