İşte bu tartışmalı ve trajik yaşamöyküsü, ölümünden altmış yıl sonra, tıpkı Semmelweis gibi hekim adayı olan Louis-Ferdinand Céline tarafından bitirme tezi olarak kaleme alınır. Bu sansasyonel yaşamı tez formu içinde anıtsallaştırmak, belki de ancak Céline gibi aykırı bir dehanın aklına gelip altından kalkabileceği kadar büyük bir iştir.
 
Céline külliyatının bugüne dek Türkçede eksik kalan bu önemli parçasını, kimilerine göre yazarın ilk yapıtı olan Semmelweis’ı Ayberk Erkay Fransızca aslından çevirdi.

Louis Ferdinand Celine(1894-1961), personaje denostado por su antisemitismo y filonazismo, se dio a conocer con esta novela, publicada originalmente en 1932, con la que sorprendió por su lenguaje violentamente satírico, rupturista e incluso obsceno. Ni su siguiente obra, “Muerte a crédito”, ni sus novelas más autobiográficas y nihilistas como “Norte”, “De un castillo a otro” o la póstuma “Rigodón” alcanzaron la misma fuerza y poder de seducción. Tras Marcel Proust, el autor francés más traducido e internacionalmente reconocido y popular del siglo xx sigue siendo Céline, cuya influencia se ha señalado en la obra de escritores muy diversos (Henry Miller, Charles Bukowski, Alessandro Baricco, Krut Vonnegut...).

Une pure merveille, un style incomparable; celui d'un Celine degouté par la guerre, ecoeuré par les hommes, un vocabulaire majestueux et une description des lieux et des situations d'une rare justesse tant la crudité des mots révèle les choses telles qu'elles sont, et non pas telles qu'on croit qu'elles sont. Au début, on a l'impression d'avancer à tâtons dans un grand tunnel crasseux et obscur, la faute au grand bordel de la vie probablement, puis on saisit la structure du bouquin.
