Seneca 21: On the Shortness of Life

How to Live a Happy Life, One Stoic Moment at a Time It's not how much you make, it's how you live. Letters from a Stoic is a first-person look into how an experienced Stoic applies philosophy to ordinary life and the world around him. He was also a tutor of Nero, a dramatist, philosopher, slave owner, etc. But his essay-like letters reveal a man struggling to make sense of a world of power, wealth and abundance, oestensibly ruled by reason, suffused with uncertainty and enveloped in paganism. Seneca's Stoic doctrine of nature is remarkably close to that of Emerson or modern American environmentalists. The wise man (sapiens) will never be bored when contemplating the simple things of nature. The natural beauty of the countryside and the healthful action of the waves can have a calming effect. The basic message of Stoicism that Seneca presents here is profound and vital. The key to a happy life is to live in accordance with nature. This is accomplished by training yourself not to desire more than you have and to learn to be content with what comes to you. Freedom from attachments Govern your emotions with reason, resign yourself to fate, and free yourself from the attachments of your desires. This includes not only the extravagance with which society distracts us from nature, or the obviously harmful excesses of food and drink, but even the attachment to your own life. Only by conquering your fear of death can you experience true freedom and live a life of quality. This book offers an inexpensive selection of Seneca's letters to his friend Lucilius. These letters are a treasure of practical wisdom on how to live and enjoy life. Essentially Seneca tells his friend (and us) that freedom and tranquility result from our inner character and not external circumstances. A change in our well being is therefore more a question of an improvement in our character than a move of physical place or circumstances. Those who build character will endure life and attain wisdom, inner peace and tranquility. Why you should read this book (again.) Certainly this is a book that will make you think, however it is not just for the casual read. To get the most from this book you need to set aside the time to fully digest exactly what it is saying. The Apocolocyntosis is a political satire on the Roman emperor Claudius, probably written by Seneca the Younger. The work traces the death of Claudius, his ascent to heaven and judgment by the gods, and his eventual descent to Hades. At each turn, of course, Seneca mocks the late emperor's personal failings, most notably his arrogant cruelty and his inarticulateness. After Mercury persuades Clotho to kill the emperor, Claudius walks to Mount Olympus, where he convinces Hercules to let the gods hear his suit for deification in a session of the divine senate. Proceedings are in Claudius' favor until Augustus delivers a long and sincere speech listing some of Claudius' most notorious crimes.

The Epistulae morales ad Lucilium (Latin for moral letters to Lucilius) are a collection of 124 letters which were written by Seneca at the end of his life, during his retirement, and written after he had worked for the Emperor Nero for fifteen years. They are addressed to Lucilius, the then procurator of Sicily. The letters highlight many moral and ethical ways to live, and address many of the issues known to man, about life and death. These letters have been carefully adapted into a contemporary format to allow for easy reading and understanding. This is part one of three which contains letters 41 - 82.

On the Shortness of Life in English is a moral essay written by Seneca the Younger in 49 AD, a Roman Stoic philosopher, to his father-in-law Paulinus. The philosopher brings up many Stoic principles on the nature of time, namely that men waste much of it in meaningless pursuits. According to the essay, nature gives man enough time to do what is really important and the individual must allot it properly. In general, time can be best used in the study of philosophy, according to Seneca.The same title is also given to a different letter, number 49 in the Letters to Lucilius.

The three tasks were: yoke the fiery bulls, compete with the giants, and slay the dragon that was guarding the fleece. After Jason is successful, Medea kills her own brother to distract her father and enable their escape. After their return to Iolcus, they were again forced to flee when Medea uses her powers to have Jason''s uncle Pelias killed by his own daughters. Jason and Medea next settle in Corinth where they had two sons. In order to climb the political ladder, Jason leaves Medea for Creusa who is the daughter of King Creon. Medea opens up the play by cursing Creusa and King Creon (1-44). King Creon gives Medea one day before she is exiled and she does not take Jason''s advice on going peacefully(192-557). She uses a regal robe to poison and sends it as a gift for Creusa on her wedding day with Jason. The chorus describe in great detail the rage, scorn, and anger that Medea felt as she plotted her revenge. The chorus prays to the gods that Jason (the leader of the Argonauts) is spared from Medea''s vengeance (579-652). Medea''s curse contains poisons, snake blood, herbs, and the invocations to all the underworld gods. The cursed robe kills Creusa and Creon by catching on fire when Creusa puts it on. Creon tries to put out his daughter but is unsuccessful and he catches on fire too (817-843). Their death does not satisfy Medea but only awakens her vengeful spirt more. Jason''s betrayal blinds Medea so much that her number one priority is hurting Jason. Even if hurting Jason means hurting her children. Medea sacrifices her children from the roof of her house in order to hurt Jason (982-1025). Medea escapes in a dragon chariot while she throws the bodies of the boys down to Jason. Jason closes the play by stating that there are no gods because otherwise such acts would have not been committed (1026-1027). Euripides'' Medea was written before Seneca''s Medea and even though they are similar there are differences. Seneca starts off his play with Medea herself expressing her hatred of Jason and Creon. Her first line is "O gods! Vengeance! Come to me now, I beg, and help me..." While Euripides introduces Medea later on in scene one and she complains to her nurse of the injustices she has faced. The chorus in Euripides'' Medea is not objective towards her. The chorus in Seneca''s Medea does not ridicule her and has an objective position through out the play. Seneca''s chorus does not show sympathy towards Medea. The final scenes are particularly different because Medea does not blame Jason for the death of her children in Seneca''s version. She even kills one of her sons in front of Jason and blames herself for their death. In Euripides'' version Medea does the opposite, because she blames Jason and does not carry any guilt or blame with her.
