Turkey hosts more refugees than any other country in the world, with forced migrants from Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, and other countries converging, either with hopes to settle in Turkey or to continue onwards to the European Union (EU). This volume addresses the specific experiences and trajectories of forced migrants in Turkey in the context of local and national contexts and the future of EU-Turkey relations. It presents the demographics of forced migrants, the biographies and future plans of refugees, and their interactions with civil society, states, and international agencies. A focus is on organized violence and corresponding experiences in countries of origin, during transit, and at current places. Based on extensive quantitative and qualitative research, this book will be of interest to researchers and practitioners in the fields of migration, human security, and refugee studies, as well as of sociology, political sciences, and international relations.

This volume analyses civil society as an important factor in the European refugee regime. Based on empirical research, the chapters explore different aspects, structures and forms of civil society engagement during and after 2015. Various institutional, collective and individual activities are examined in order to better understand the related processes of refugees’ movements, reception and integration. Several chapters also explore the historical development of the relationship between a range of actors involved in solidarity movements and care relationships with refugees across different member states. During the 1930s, thousands of social scientists fled the Nazi regime or other totalitarian European regimes, mainly towards the Americas. The New School for Social Research (NSSR) in New York City and El Colegio de México (Colmex) in Mexico City both were built based on receiving exiled academics from Europe. Comparing the first twenty years of these organizations, this book offers a deeper understanding of the corresponding institutional contexts and impacts of emigrated, exiled and refugeed academics. It analyses the ambiguities of scientists’ situations between emigration, return‐migration and transnational life projects and examines the corresponding dynamics of application, adaptation or amalgamation of (travelling) theories and methods these academics brought. Despite its institutional focus, it also deals with the broader context of forced migration of intellectuals and scientists in the second half of the last century in Europe and Latin America. In so doing, the book invites a deeper understanding of the challenges of forced migration for scholars in the 21st century.

In diesem Band bearbeiten Soziologinnen und Soziologen die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von Vielfalt und Zusammenhalt von Vergesellschaftung im 21. Jahrhundert. Dabei werden aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln zum Teil stark variierende Antworten gegeben. Gemeinsamer Bezugspunkt ist dabei die soziologische Annahme, dass Vielfalt und Zusammenhalt deshalb nicht in einem prinzipiellen Gegensatz zueinander stehen, weil alle sozial relevante Vielfalt immer auch gesellschaftlich hergestellte Vielfalt ist. Gegen unkritisch-pauschale optimistische oder pessimistische Beurteilungen zunehmender Vielfalt für gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt werden spezifische Bedingungen herausgearbeitet, unter denen Vielfalt für Einzelgruppen und Gesellschaften als Chance oder als Herausforderung zu sehen ist.
