These works, as the sub-title makes clear, are unfinished sketches for Philosophical Investigations, possibly the most important and influential philosophical work of modern times. The 'Blue Book' is a set of notes dictated to Witgenstein's Cambridge students in 1933-1934: the 'Brown Book' was a draft for what eventually became the growth of the first part of Philosophical Investigations. This book reveals the germination and growth of the ideas which found their final expression in Witgenstein's later work. It is indispensable therefore to students of Witgenstein's thought and to all those who wish to study at first-hand the mental processes of a thinker who fundamentally changed the course of modern philosophy.

This new edition of Wittgenstein’s book, strictly following the author’s recommendations, allows a more immediate comprehension of the text and dissolves several false problems that had deceived readers and scholars for a century. The faithful interpretation of decimal numbers (which alone, according to Wittgenstein, “give perspicuity and clarity to the book”) shows that the Tractatus stems from a home-page containing seven cardinal propositions and develops level by level, by perfectly coherent reading units. Indeed, “the Tractatus must be read in accordance with the numbering system, and that demands that the reader follow the text after the manner of a logical tree, which is the way in which the book was composed and in which Wittgenstein arranged his philosophical remarks” (Peter Hacker, The Philosophical Quarterly). Thence, the Tractatus is no longer an obstacle course, where critics and students were strenuously committed to decipher anacolutes, semantic jumps and bizarre combinations. On the contrary, it reveals to be, at long last, a book that every reader, from her own point of view, can enjoy. The actual form of Wittgenstein’s work discloses the harmony and the aesthetic value of a philosophical text that is contemporary and is one of the most amazing masterpieces of world literature.

Ludwig Wittgenstein, who died in Cambridge in 1951, is one of the most powerful influences on contemporary philosophy, yet he shunned publicity and was essentially a private man. His friend Norman Malcolm (himself an eminent philosopher) wrote this remarkably vivid personal memoir ofWittgenstein, which was published in 1958 and was immediately recognized as a moving and truthful portrait of this gifted, difficult man.This edition includes also the complete text of the fifty-seven letters which Wittgenstein wrote to Malcolm over a period of eleven years. In 1938 Wittgenstein delivered a short course of lectures on aesthetics to a small group of students at Cambridge. The present volume has been compiled from notes taken down at the time by three of the students: Rush Rhees, Yorick Smythies, and James Taylor. They have been supplemented by notes of conversations on Freud (to whom reference was made in the course on aesthetics) between Wittgenstein and Rush Rhees, and by notes of some lectures on religious belief. As very little is known of Wittgenstein's views on these subjects from his published works, these notes should be of considerable interest to students of contemporary philosophy. Further, their fresh and informal style should recommend Wittgenstein to those who find his Tractatus and Philosophical Investigations a little formidable.

No longo processo em que Wittgenstein se ocupa de algumas de nossas certezas mais banais — "Eu sei qual é o meu nome", "Existem objetos físicos" —, nós o vemos chegar a um espantoso resultado: a expressão linguística dessas certezas inevitavelmente irá nos trair. No exato momento em que julgamos manifestar as verdades mais triviais, nossa linguagem demonstra sua precariedade e simplesmente falha. Mas isso não significa, o filósofo insiste, que deveríamos suspeitar de tais certezas. Significa apenas que nossa confiança deve repousar não na linguagem (em nossa expressão da certeza), mas em nossa ação (no que fazemos ao agir com certeza). "No princípio era o ato." Neste verso, que Wittgenstein empresta de Goethe, manifesta-se talvez o leitmotiv deste livro. O que ele nos diz é que qualquer tentativa de apontar para os fundamentos de nossas certezas terá que ir além da linguagem. Não na direção de algum tipo de transcendência; tampouco na direção de qualquer esfera que se possa chamar de conceitual. Antes, há um mistério que teremos de resgatar daquele verso do Fausto: até mesmo o que nos parece mais evidente, até mesmo o que nos parece pura e simplesmente lógico, só pode revelar-se em nossa ação. No modo contingente e humanamente instável como agimos. Que o leitor não se deixe enganar pela simplicidade desse resultado. Ao reavaliar o papel que a certeza desempenha em nossos jogos de linguagem, o grande filósofo reformula, com surpreendente originalidade, uma de suas intuições mais fecundas, que o acompanha desde seus primeiros escritos. Las Investigaciones filosóficas dan a la luz en forma de libro observaciones que conforman, en palabras de su autor, "un conjunto de bosquejos de paisajes", fruto de "recorrer en zigzag un amplio ámbito del pensamiento en todas las direcciones". Tratan del concepto de significado, de comprensión, de proposición, reglas y gramática, necesidad, intencionalidad, justificación y experiencia, sobre voluntad y los estados de conciencia, entre otros asuntos. Sobre el trasfondo del Tractatus logico-philosophicus, y en contraste con él, Wittgenstein trata de dilucidar los problemas filosóficos generados por el uso y el abuso del lenguaje ordinario. Esta labor de desenmascaramiento recurre a un método de "entrelazado" o "trenzado" de los argumentos, en que "se superponen muchas fibras". El minimalismo expresivo y el estilo "aforístico" del texto son así producto de la concisión y la intensidad del pensamiento. Este trabajo reflexivo suscita una pluralidad de lecturas, dejando al lector que siga indagando por su cuenta los problemas y aporte su solución. Como dice Wittgenstein: "No quisiera con mi escrito ahorrarles a otros el pensar. Acaso, si fuera posible, estimular a alguien a tener pensamientos propios". La presente traducción, basada en la cuarta edición revisada de la obra, ha tenido en cuenta los últimos resultados de la investigación sobre los manuscritos originales y las distintas versiones previas del texto publicado póstumamente en 1953.
