This article is a critical analysis of Ted Hughes' Birthday Letters. The author explores the analogy Hughes implicitly makes in his poems between the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and his relationship with his late wife Sylvia Plath and her poetry. This analogy is supported through analysing particular poems from Birthday Letters. The analyses of the poems cover the couple's relationship, Plath's relationship with her father and her suicide.

"Bundtzen argues that Plath's original plan represented a conscious response to her disintegrating marriage - the swearing off of an old life with Hughes and the creation of a new self as a woman and poet. The poems Hughes deleted show her in an angry dialogue over their marital breakup, with Plath writing several of these bitterly ironic poems on the verso of Hughes's manuscript for an unpublished play entitled "The Calm." Beneath the surface of Hughes's "calm" we see a tempest building, created by the woman who chose Shakespeare's Ariel as her poetic identity."--BOOK JACKET.

In this anthology, filmmakers, psychoanalysts, film scholars, and cultural historians use a psychoanalytic approach to examine Bernardo Bertolucci's epic film The Last Emperor (I988). Evolving out of a conference on Bertolucci's work,the essays interweave psychological, political, and cinematic themes in The Last Emperor as well as in much of Bertolucci's other works. This volume includes a foreword by Bernardo Bertolucci and is organized into four parts or "takes," including "Filmcraft," "Psychoanalysis," "Film Scholarship," and "Cultural History." Although we can never fully know the real Aisingioro Pu Yi, Bertolucci used his vision of the intricate relationship between art, ideology, and the psychic experience to tell the story of one ordinary man's extraordinary life. Bertolucci's The Last Emperor hopes to illuminate this complex and often enigmatic creation as well as renew an excitement about the possibilities of interdisciplinary criticism in film studies.
