A Guide to the Manuscripts Preserved in the Public Record Office

Excerpt from Calendar of the Manuscripts of the Most Honourable the Marquess of Salisbury K. G., K. C. V. O., Preserved at Hatfield House, Hertfordshire, Vol. 17 With the exception of the discovery of the Gunpowder Plot towards the end of the year 1605 and the events arising out of it little of striking domestic interest is dealt with in the papers calendared in the present volume which describes the manuscripts at Hatfield for the whole of that year. Parliament was prorogued on February 7 (p. 52) and did not meet again until November 5 when the Plot would appear to have driven all other matters out of the minds of its members. For the time being, therefore, we hear little or nothing further here of the differences which were noted in the preceding volume as beginning to arise between the King and the Commons. On the other hand there is much of interest in the papers before us concerning the relations of this country with its immediate neighbours on the continent. Although the war in the Netherlands was of secondary importance in comparison with the military events of the preceding years the difficulties of England after the conclusion of the treaties with Spain and the Archdukes in 1604 in maintaining an attitude of neutrality between her new friends and their foes of the Dutch Republic, her allies of so long standing, were great indeed and are exemplified in a number of incidents which will be dealt with later in this Introduction. Following the practice adopted in the more recent volumes of this Calendar the principal subjects of interest to be found in the present one will here be brieﬂy indicated under a series of headings.
