E solo l'appartenenza alla casta militare, o a quella religiosa, permette un rapido passaggio alla casta superiore e aristocratica, come ben sa il capitano Joe Mauser, simpatico e geniale protagonista del racconto di Reynolds. Una geniale intuizione sociale in cui Mack Reynolds rappresenta molti dei difetti della società occidentale. Mack Reynolds è nato in California nel 1917 ed è morto in Messico nel 1983. Iscritto fin dai tempi del liceo al Socialist Labor Party, ha viaggiato in lungo e in largo per gli Stati Uniti per far campagna a favore del suo partito. Negli anni Cinquanta, probabilmente anche a causa del clima difficile per un socialista come lui durante la campagna anticomunista del senatore McCarthy, si trasferì in Messico dove visse fino alla morte. Alla fine degli anni Quaranta, su incoraggiamento dell'amico Fredric Brown, cominciò a scrivere fantascienza. In oltre trent'anni di carriera ha scritto una cinquantina di romanzi e innumerevoli racconti sempre caratterizzati da humor e temi sociali. Mack Reynolds è stato uno scrittore ironico; i suoi libri si leggono sempre con un mezzo sorriso sulle labbra. Ma è stato anche uno che di economia, di politica, di società ne sapeva parecchio.
