Die bisherigen philologischen und historischen Modelle zur römischen Religion verhindern ein Verständnis für die Vielfältigkeit des Betens im antiken Rom und reduzieren jenes auf normative und formalisierte Akte, die von einem kulturellen oder kultischen Wissen diktiert und mit Hilfe eines schriftlichen Regelwerkes priesterlich verwaltet werden. Diese Studie erhebt das betende Individuum inmitten des ihn prägenden und umgebenden sozialen Kontextes zum Ausgangspunkt der Untersuchung und begreift somit das Beten als ganzkörperliche und multidimensionale Kommunikation. Sie eröffnet Einblicke in die Kreativität und das Erlebnis des Betens, aus welchen diese Vielfältigkeit hervorgeht. Als methodische Grundlage dient das Konzept der „gelebten Religion“, deren Akzente um kreatives Handeln, Verkörperung und Erfahrung mit einer Bandbreite an historischen, religionswissenschaftlichen, psychologischen und anthropologischen Ansätzen erweitert und konkretisiert wird. Ausgehend von dieser perspektivischen und methodischen Grundlage entwirft dieses Werk ein neues Bild religiöser Praxis in Rom, knüpft an den modernen Forschungsdiskursen zum Gebet an und erweitert diese im Hinblick auf eine gelebte Religion.

The Lived Ancient Religion project has radically changed perspectives on ancient religions and their supposedly personal or public character. This volume applies and further develops these methodological tools, new perspectives and new questions. The religious transformations of the Roman Imperial period appear in new light and more nuances by comparative confrontation and the integration of many disciplines. The contributions are written by specialists from a variety of disciplinary contexts (Jewish Studies, Theology, Classics, Early Christian Studies) dealing with the history of religion of the Mediterranean, West-Asian, and European area from the (late) Hellenistic period to the (early) Middle Ages and shaped by their intensive exchange. From the point of view of their respective fields of research, the contributors engage with discourses on agency, embodiment, appropriation and experience. They present innovative research in four fields also of theoretical debate, which are “Experiencing the Religious”, “Switching the Code”, „A Thing Called Body“ and “Commemorating the Moment”.

This volume presents a first comprehensive contribution to the exploration of the concept of the ‘home front’ in Greek and Roman Antiquity. It crosses borders between different areas of classical studies by investigating the various forms of impact that war had on the ancient home front. To this end, the book deploys a variety of methodological approaches that shed light on several aspects of the home front. These draw on advances made in the fields of psychology, literature, history, social sciences and religious studies. The volume discusses the impact of war on the civilian communities in terms of its effects above all on the level of the social and religious sphere.
