Pocas épocas como la nuestra se han visto sometidas a procesos de transformación que recorren por igual sus estructuras económicas, políticas, sociales y culturales. Estos procesos, que han venido a interpretarse bajo los conceptos de globalización y mundialización, son la causa de una nueva situación planetaria marcada por una creciente complejidad e interdependencia. Por ello, debemos identificar el pliegue, el momento en que el proceso condensa su complejidad, y replantear el destino de la cultura, recuperando no solo otros espacios de la experiencia, sino también la construcción de nuevos mapas para representar un orden de las cosas, más complejo y dramático del que estamos acostumbrados a pensar. Esta misma tensión recorre la cultura del proyecto entendida en su dimensión más amplia. La arquitectura y el diseño deben intervenir en la decisión sobre nuevas condiciones civilizatorias, construyendo nuevos lenguajes, dinámicas y sistemas a la altura de los tiempos. This guide brings together the most important and interesting examples of modern and contemporary architecture in Barcelona. It covers the emergence of Modernisme and Noucentisme, creative periods for which Barcelona is known the world over: the emblematic German Pavilion by Mies van der Rohe (1929), rationalist works conceived from the 40s and 50s, large housing projects of the 70s, the Olympic architecture of the late 80s, post-Olympic architecture, examples of the ongoing urban redefinition from the 90s, and the iconic architecture of the 21st century. During the last 30 years, Advanced Architecture has consolidated an interactive and informational logic that differs from that of Modernity and Postmodernity. This logic is threefold; it is modulated through three coexisting protocols -modes of action- whose peaks of intensity occur in three different decades: Conformative Protocols (1990-2000), Distributive Protocols (2000-2010) and Expansive Protocols (2010-2020). This work proposes a threefold cultural narrative whose interactive and informational logic differs from that of modernity and postmodernity. It positions three different ethos by critically approaching the architectural side of a cultural mutation that has been affecting the Western experimental areas of knowledge and practice since the end of the last century. A transformative process constituted by a constellation of transdisciplinary manifestations, accelerations, turns, shortcuts and clusterizations that by no means can be read under one single epistemological umbrella. In this sense, rather than approaching the practice of architecture focusing on its disciplinary inner specificity, this book approaches the research of experimental architecture focusing on its extra-disciplinary entanglements. It argues that a vast multiplicity of fields of knowledge participates in a cultural endeavour modulated through three protocols -forms of action- that singularize three decades: Conformative Protocols (1990-2000), Distributive Protocols (2000-2010) and Expansive Protocols (2010-2020). These three periods shouldn’t be read as three hermetic and concatenated monades, but as three different modulations of the same narrative, that is, as three overlapping and coexisting systems whose peaks of intensity occur in three different decades. However, the main purpose of this book is not limited to unveiling the ethos of these three conjugations. It also aims at using this framework as a “time-field”, a narrative map that moves from the classificatory to the cartographical in order to vectorize the last 30 years of experimental architecture. In this sense, this book argues that this threefold set of protocols represents the progressive attempt to constitute critical interiorities “looking for” and “produced through” interactions that are increasingly more intimate and whose agents are increasingly more diverse. A tendency oriented towards the consolidation of an “intimacy between strangers” that highly resonates with the cultural and technological landscape in which experimental architecture operates.

The Clichy-Batignolles stand as a new urban landscape liaison element, an essential urban portal along the peripheric territorial arc, just by the historic city. The site thus becomes an important urban platform, a place of exchange in the relational-spaces web organization of Paris. It shall serve as connection point for the various territorial, urban, environmental, social and cultural scales. The aim of the book comes from the relations that are given between both buildings done on the sustainable Clichy-Batignolles neighborhood in Paris build by Gausa-Raveau actarchitecture & Avenier-Cornejo Architectes. The concept and material display of the book arises because of the visual quakes that present the materiality of the two towers. Finally, the idea of vibration is given between the buildings and the environment.
