Esta reflexão sobre dois conceitos, baseada em abordagens literárias e filosóficas, produziu um corpus de textos, capaz de retomar, com uma focagem multidisciplinar, a famosa antítese que animou amplas discussões desde a Antiguidade, com origem na Atenas clássica, uma época de luzes que havia de marcar todo o pensamento ocidental ao longo de milénios. Por isso, ainda que assumindo como ponto de partida os argumentos em que assentou, no passado, a discussão dos dois conceitos – nómos versus phýsis –, o espaço de reflexão se tenha aberto ao estudo da sua transmissão e recepção, reconhecendo a essa polémica uma indispensável diacronia.

Este volume pretende reunir um conjunto de reflexões referentes à ideia de ‘Crime e violência’, como são expressos na Antiguidade greco-latina e na sua recepção. Depois de um texto introdutório que explora a terminologia específica deste assunto, seguem-se doze artigos que cobrem um lapso temporal que vai da época arcaica da Grécia à contemporaneidade portuguesa. A inclusão de diversos géneros literários permite também observar diferentes modelos estéticos na abordagem do assunto. Épica, tragédia, retórica, romance, dão voz a diferentes contextos em que a violência é central, bem como ao entendimento que cada sociedade retira desse fenómeno humano. This volume wants to put together several reflections allusive to the idea of ‘Crime and violence’, as they are expressed by Greek-Roman Antiquity and later in its reception. After a first text of introduction, exploring specific terminology, twelve articles follow covering a period of centuries from archaic Greece till Portuguese modernity. The inclusion of different literary genres allows us to observe the different aesthetic models under which this subject is expressed. Epics, tragedy, rhetoric, novel give voice to different contexts where violence is central, as well as to the sensibility each society has of this human phenomenon.

Que mais relevante percurso, literário, filosófico e científico, se poderia propor, ao universo conturbado que nos cerca, do que este voo pela imaginação e pela memória? Interest in the subject of UTOPIA / DYSTOPIA has marked modernity, though it is a literary and cultural model with very deep roots, stretching from the Ancient World and reinforced by the Renaissance. What more relevant literary, philosophical and scientific trajectory could we propose for the perturbed universe that surrounds us, than this flight into the imagination and memory?

This book includes 21 chapters dedicated to the study of contemporary, Portuguese and Brazilian poets influenced by the Greco-Roman tradition. It integrates the international bibliography on reception studies in an Ibero-American context. However, the comparison between poets from the two countries highlights the cultural community that, despite the differences, unites them. Travels, routes, and adventures, taken in a linear or symbolic sense, are the common trace of all contributions. The variety of tastes, the greater or smaller closeness to the ancient models, and the authors’ preferences contribute to an overall view of the classical imprint on contemporary poetry as a specific area of literature.

The contributions to this volume cover a large diachronic, geographical, and cultural space. Some of the texts go back to antiquity, using the Odyssey as the most significant source for several reflections, both ancient and contemporary, and therefore the safest link between old and contemporary versions. In addition, in the modern and contemporary summaries and tales analysed here, predominance is given to epics (Homer and other famous stories known from the epic cycle) as a source, exemplified by texts belonging to various literary works from across the globe, focused on the influence that major political phenomena can have on universal creativity.
