Die in diesem Buch versammelten sechs Essays befassen sich mit Kommentaren, die im 15. Jahrhundert zu unterschiedlichen Autoren (Sallust, Vergil, Martial, Plinius d. A., Dioscurides und Apuleius) verfasst oder uberarbeitet wurden. Diese Kommentare bieten eine grobe Bandhreite an Stoffen und wissenschaftlichen Auscinandersetzungen. Jeder Essay stellt dabei den cinzalnen Kommentar in den zeitgenossischen Kontext der Wiederentdeckung der antiken Schriftsteller und beschaftigt sich mit einer Frage, die wichtige Auswirkungen auf die Geschichte des humanistischen Unterrichts und der Hermeneutik hat: Gibt es uberhaupt einen Renaissance-Kommentar. Die Autoren verfolgen das Ziel, das fur einen Kommentar der Renaissance Typische (im Gegensatz zu einem Kommentar aus dem Mittelalter) zu finden, d.h. diejenigen inhaltlichen oder methodischen Bestandteile zu erkennen, die einen Kommentar als padagogische oder wissenschaftliche Arbeit der Renaissance auszeichnen.

On Renaissance Commentaries

Plutarch's Lives of great Greek and Roman public figures are among the central texts of European culture. Like most Greek authors Plutarch had been virtually unknown in Western Europe during the Middle Ages, but when Renaissance humanists rekindled interest in Greek language and culture, he became one of the most widely read authors of the period. Marianne Pade discusses the many Latin translations of the Lives produced during the fifteenth century, examines their diffusion in manuscripts and printed books and shows how Plutarch came to influence fifteenth-century Italian culture. The overwhelming interest in the Lives can be explained by studying the way Classical Antiquity was used for ideological purposes in Renaissance Italy. To a great extent the historical effects of the biographies reflect the ideologies of the environments in which they were translated and read. The purpose of the biographies, and often of the forewords of the translations as well, was to evoke or create a city's national myths or to promote a patron or the city itself. The second volume contains an edition of all the letters of dedication and a catalogue of the preserved manuscripts.

The Reception of Plutarch's Lives in Fifteenth-century Italy

The conference was part of the international research network Renaissance: The Origins of Modernity organized by the University of Copenhagen. The 13 papers include discussions of the reception of the political Aristotle from Brunetto Latini to Dante Alighieri, Greek and Latin learning in Theodore Gaza's Antirrheticon, and Caspar Bartholin. The special situation in the Duchy of Ferrara offers an element of dynastic continuity in the various phases of Humanistic and Renaissance culture which makes it nearly unique in European history. The approaches chosen by the contributors in various disciplines -- music, theatre, pictorial arts, literature, history of ideas -- make it possible to analyse the interaction between the cultural policy of the "Signori" and the intellectuals of their court, covering the historical period from 1441 to the passing of the Duchy of Ferrara into the hands of the Papal State in 1598.
