With the advent of care in the community for the mentally afflicted, the self-contained villages for the apparently insane have now been consigned to the history books. These once bustling Victorian institutions were commonly known in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as the county asylum or the pauper lunatic asylum , and were an accepted and essential part of society for nearly two centuries. It is difficult to believe that, in 1914, there were 102 such asylums, accommodating over 100,000 patients, the majority of whom lived their entire lives under care and treatment. In 2014, with the exception of those that have already been demolished, these buildings now lie empty and derelict, or have been converted for contemporary living. Through this photographic book, we journey into the inner sanctum of a world of lost dreams, where hope was more often than not unwillingly traded for an uncomfortable acceptance.

How does Bauman understand the concept of freedom, and how does this understanding relate to the political traditions of conservatism, liberalism and socialism? Mark Davis offers a critical enquiry into the sociology of Zygmunt Bauman, focusing on his English-language writings from the 1960s onwards. The book contributes to sociological debates about modern society by offering an interpretation of Bauman's work based on the concept of freedom, especially in terms of his extensive consideration of consumerism. Existing studies of Bauman have tended to focus uncritically upon other salient themes in his work, notably culture, power and socialism; Davis repairs the lack of critical engagement in the literature by identifying freedom as a focus for critical reflection. He also opens up new areas of discourse by analyzing Bauman's understanding of freedom in relation to the three great political traditions of conservatism, liberalism and socialism. This is an original contribution to discussions around Bauman's work which will be of interest to both sociologists and political theorists.

Race Traitors 2 presents the continuing conflicts of gang violence and murder in the city of Chicago in the year 1974. A record number of homicides and shootings plagued the city with no end in sight. Gang Crimes detectives, Myles Sivad and Aristotle Ashford were trapped in a wedge of gang violence as they struggled to address the carnage. Detective Sivad often found himself overwhelmed with duties and personal conflicts that subjugated his conscious and stirred his ability to stay focused on the present state of conditions in the city. His partner, detective Ashford was his pillar and he too found himself struggling with the tasks at hand. Murder had become a virus in the black south side communities as mothers of young victims continued to mourn the death of a son. From 1971 through 1974 hundreds of young black males were murdered or gunshot victims as gang supremacy surged. Detectives, Ashford and Sivad were bound by their oath to serve and protect life and property and committed to their pledge. In their attempt to deal with the physical and psychological stress of their duties, they fought against the intruders that were determined to destroy the black community. Entrenched in this struggle, they were forced to become participants in the growing reality of human anguish in an urban warfare that pitted race, culture and dedication to duty in a triangle of conflict.
