Weil "tote Mädchen keinen Abschluss machen", wird die 17-jährige Marty kurz vor dem Examen in eine Klinik eingewiesen. Zwei Jahre lang hat sie sich fast zu Tode gehungert, denn das ist das Einzige, was sie kontrollieren kann: ob sie isst oder nicht. Allem anderen in ihrem Leben - dem Alkoholproblem ihrer Mutter, der Zurückweisung durch den Vater, den Ansprüchen ihres Freundes - fühlt sie sich ausgeliefert. Und das, obwohl sie intelligent, wortgewandt und äußert taff ist. Ihre ersten Tage in der Klinik sind geprägt von Wut und Feindseligkeit, mit beißender Ironie lässt sie Mitpatientinnen, Pflegepersonal und Psychologen auflaufen. Dennoch muss sie sich den Regeln des Hauses anpassen: Essenszeiten, Gruppensitzungen, Einzeltherapie. Mit klarem Blick erfasst Marty den traurigen Zustand ihrer Mitpatienten und auch ihre eigenen Probleme, trotzdem ist jede Mahlzeit, jede Gewichtszunahme eine Qual und ein Kampf. Und so gibt sie weiterhin die Starke, die mit der großen Klappe, die sich um nichts schert. Erst als die 8-jährige Lily eingeliefert wird, öffnet sich Marty ein wenig und langsam geht es aufwärts. Doch der Weg zurück ins Leben ist alles andere als leicht.
