Painter and printmaker Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (1609–64) was one of the most technically superb and innovative artists of the Italian Baroque. Although he is best known for his evocative etchings that reveal a mastery of light to rival that of Rembrandt and Van Dyck, he also redefined the drawing and printmaking genres through the introduction of his monotyping technique and was among the first to conceive of the oil sketch as a finished work. Sadly, Castiglione’s prolific artistic output has been largely overshadowed by his turbulent character and troubled private life. With this lavishly illustrated biography, leading Castiglione scholar Timothy J. Standring and curator Martin Clayton and seek to restore to prominence this forgotten master of the Italian Baroque. Drawing on extensive new research into court records and other documents of the time, Standring and Clayton have reconstructed the artist’s life, from his arrest for murder that led to the estrangement of his contemporaries and the loss of valuable patrons to his eventual decision to flee the region. At first glance, there may appear to be more to separate Michelangelo (1475-1564) and Bill Viola (b. 1951) than to unite them: one, the great master of the Italian Renaissance; the other, the creator of state-of-the-art immersive sound and video installations. This landmark publication celebrates one of the most exciting periods in European art. It brings together 93 paintings and 85 drawings from the Royal Collection and accompanies an exhibition of international importance. The earliest paintings in the book date from the beginning of the sixteenth century and include Giovanni Bellini’s Portrait of a Young Man, Lorenzo Costa’s Portrait of a Lady with a Lapdog, and the Portrait of a Man, which has previously been attributed to Raphael. From the end of the seventeenth century is the series of twelve paintings on copper by Luca Giordano, illustrating the story of Cupid and Psyche. In between are works by Andrea del Sarto, Bronzino, Caravaggio, Correggio, Titian, Giulio Romano, Jacopa Bassano, Lorenzo Lotto, Palma Vecchio, Veronese, Parmigianino, Tintoretto, Annibale Carracci, Domenichino, Domenico Fetti, Orazio and Artemisia Gentileschi, Guido Reni, and Guercino; ranging in scale from small devotional paintings to large altarpieces, and from religious narratives to mythological subjects and portraiture. The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries also saw some of the richest and most dynamic developments in Italian drawing, and this book includes some of the finest drawings by many of the greatest artists of the period – from the achievements of the High Renaissance (including works by Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, Andrea del Sarto and Parmigianino), through the later Renaissance in northern Italy (Barocci, Tintoretto, the Carracci), to the Baroque in Rome (Domenichino, Bernini, Maratti), Bologna (Reni, Guercino) and beyond. The first exhibition to focus on images of artists from within the Royal Collection, 'Portrait of the Artist' not only show-cases self-portraits by world-renowned artists including Rembrandt, Rubens, Artemisia Gentileschi, Lucian Freud and David Hockney but also features images of artists by their friends, relatives and pupils, including the most reliable surviving likeness of Leonardo da Vinci by his student, Francesco Melzi. Well-known self-portraits intended to advertise the artist's talents will be shown alongside more intimate and personal works. The exhibition will examine a range of themes played out within these objects, from the 'cult' of the artist to the symbolism evoked through images of the artist's studio. The changing status of the artist over the centuries is another theme and the way in this is conveyed, both in the physical works and in the relationships between artist and patron will be highlighted. The role of monarchs in commissioning, collecting and displaying portraits of artists will also be discussed.
