Since 2000, Hes been writing for a monthly newspaper, the Sun Senior News, which goes to over 10,000 households in two retirement communities, Sun City Roseville (where he lives) and Sun City Lincoln Hills. He currently does two monthly features, Observations and Favorite Restaurants. This book is a collection of all, or almost all, of Martins journalistic pieces. It starts with his first story for Suttertown News, about how a water district was coping with a then years-long drought, and ends with a piece he wrote about his father for the Sun Senior News. The stories include profi les of people such as David Freeman, then head of SMUD; two notable writers in Davis, Kim Stanley Robinson and Karen Joy Fowler; a number of artists, musicians and other writers; many active senior citizens, and survivors of Pearl Harbor. Instead, they cultivated all their lives, alternative styles of young manhood--the dandy, the rogue, and the naif--which then became for a time the dominant cultural styles of much of the English-speaking world. Martin Green traces the fate of that gifted generation through the lives of two of its central figures, Harold Acton and Brian Howard, and some forty of their friends, most of whom attained considerable importance in British life, notably, in the arts and letters, but also in the sciences, diplomacy, and politics. The stories in this volume are in three sections. "Retirement Stories" are about senior citizens, such as a retiree prompted by a college survey to examine his past ("Mr. Maple's Good Life"), a retiree prompted to think about human connections after a chance meeting with "The Lady from Australia" and a retiree who sees a chance for revenge when the ex-boss who fired him moves next door ("New Neighbors"). "Left-Over Stories" are those I couldn't fit into Volume I. These include a story telling you how to make "Money", worth the price of the book alone, and a trilogy continuing the story of the young man in "Being in Love" with "Getting Married" and "Struggling On" in the early married years. The third section has stories written just for fun, which I hope, will be fun to read. There's a ghost story, a vampire story, a love potion story, a magic ring story and more. In the last story, "Unfinished Business", a writer tries to outwit death.

For someone seemingly afraid of almost everything Garry Stanley is something of a genius, for he has an innate ability to entertain people or more specifically to understand exactly what will entertain Mancunians sufficiently to make them throw a quid or two in his guitar case on a Saturday afternoon. Garry is the inspiration and emotional glue which binds the most famous busking band in the UK, the Piccadilly Rats. Each of the Rats has led a colourful life on society's margins; there is former friend of the Krays Ray Boddington, whose pavement performances were so beloved of Mancunian audiences that his untimely death was commemorated on the front page of the Manchester Evening News and bass player Heath whose personal journey led him to cross three continents before finding his spiritual home on a street corner in Manchester's city centre from where the Rats blasted their way into the public's conscience. In the past decade the Rats have conquered the country from London to Blackpool, appearing on the main stage at some of the biggest festivals in the UK and even appeared on ITV's Judge Rinder Show but their ability to stop commuters and shoppers in their tracks by the sight, sound and sheer insanity of their performance in full flow has left many onlookers wondering just who these people were and how the hell they got here...
