Disons que c'est l'histoire de la journée d'un homme dont la principale occupation est de se suicider avec entrain. Du lever au coucher, dans son immeuble, dans la rue, à son travail, à l'enterrement de ses amis... En fait tout irait à peu près bien si son médecin ne venait de lui annoncer qu'un requin nage dans son corps. Heureusement, pour lui changer les idées, un quatuor de Mexicains apparaît régulièrement pour lui interpréter une chanson. L'auteur sait parfaitement mettre en scène les manies et les mesquineries de ses semblables. Maniant habilement l'humour noir, il réalise une sorte de conte cruel drolatique qui rappelle L'Ecume des jours.

Martin, le narrateur, vient d'avoir quarante ans. Il se rend à Paris pour rencontrer une productrice qui souhaite adapter un de ses romans au cinéma. Il loge chez un ami artiste qui lui prête son appartement. Il y découvre la dernière oeuvre de celui-ci : un sarcophage de métal curieusement titré : " Machine à remonter le temps ". Il s'y glisse et s'y endort. Le voilà revenu, 29 ans plus tôt, dans la ville de sa jeunesse, face à un double de lui-même alors âgé de 12 ans. Mais la relation se complique : décidément, ce double-là a l'esprit de contradiction, au point de mettre Martin, qui ne désire que l'aider, en difficulté, dans sa vie réelle comme dans l'autre, la vie rêvée. Que faire du passé ? Comment être fidèle à l'enfant que l'on a été ?
