The project “Religious Education at Schools in Europe” (REL-EDU), which is divided up into six volumes (Central Europe, Western Europe, Northern Europe, Southern Europe, South-Eastern Europe, Eastern Europe), aims to research the situation with regard to religious education in Europe. The second volume outlines the organisational form of religious education in the countries of Western Europe (England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Netherlands). This is done on the basis of thirteen key issues, which allows specific points of comparison between different countries in Europe. Thereby the volume focusses the comparative approach and facilitates further research into specific aspects of the comparison.

This volume offers an introduction to all questions of teaching Religious Education as a school subject and as an academic discipline related to this subject. The chapters cover most of the aspects that religion teachers have to face in their work, as well as the theoretical background necessary for this task. The volume is a textbook for students and teachers of religious education, be it in school or in an academic context, who are looking for reliable information on this field. The book has proven its usefulness in German speaking countries. This volume is the English translation of the German Compendium of Religious Education (edited by Gottfried Adam and Rainer Lachmann). The present English version is based on the 2012 edition which aims for a most current representation of the field. The background of the book is Protestant but its outlook is clearly ecumenical, and questions of interreligious education are considered in many of the chapters. The compendium continues to be widely used in Germany, Austria and Switzerland - as an introduction to the field and as a handbook for students who are preparing for their final exams. The English edition makes this compendium available to students and colleagues in other countries.

Basics of Religious Education

Die Verarbeitung ethischer Schlüsselprobleme gehört zum Kernbereich dessen, was nach Wolfgang Klafki unverzichtbar zur allgemeinen Bildung gehört. Sie zu kennen, sich mit ihnen auseinander zu setzen und begründet Position zu beziehen, ist spätestens seit der religionspädagogischen Wende hin zur Problem-, Schüler- und Lebensweltorientierung ein wichtiges Ziel des Religionsunterrichts. Vor diesem Hintergrund nimmt sich der vierte Band der Reihe »Theologie für Lehrerinnen und Lehrer« elf solche Schlüsselprobleme vor und klärt sie im gewohnten Dreischritt: in ihrer lebensweltlichen Relevanz, ihren theologischen Bezügen und Deutungszusammenhängen und in ihrer didaktisch-methodischen Umsetzbarkeit. Als Schlüsselprobleme werden namhaft gemacht: Umwelt, Frieden/Gewalt, Bevölkerungswachstum/Welternährung, Globalisierung, Neue elektronische Medien, Interkulturalität/Interreligiosität, Ich-Du-Beziehungen, Freizeit/Arbeit, Gesundheit/Krankheit/Behinderung, Bioethik.

Karl Heim (1874-1958) pragte als Theologe an den Universitaten Halle, Munster und seit 1920 in Tubingen sowin von 1920 bis 1948 als Fruhprediger ander Tubinger Stiftskirche Generationnen von Pfarrern. Unter Seinen Zuhorern befanden sich auch viele Nicht-Theologen, denn Karl Heim konnte einerseits komplizierte naturwissenschaftliche Sachverhalte erstaunlich einfach und doch zutreffend elementarisieren und andererseits den christlichen Glauben mit diesen Ergebnissen in einen fruchtbaren Dialog bringen, Der 23. Jahrgang dieses Jahrbuches konzentriert sich auf das Verhaltnis von Evolution und Schopfung einerseits sowie auf medizin- und gesellschaftsethisch relevante Problemstellungen andererseits. Auch mit diesem Jahrbuch wird die bleibende Bedeutung der Theologie Karl Heims fur eine dialogfahige Theologie im 21 Jahrhundert deutlich. Volume 23 of the Yearbook of the German Karl Heim Society presents a variety of articles. Most of them are devoted to the relationship between evolution and creation, and the remainder elucidates bioethical aspects. The authors want to show the enduring significance of Karl Heim's insistence on a dialogue between theology and the natural sciences, and to further the intention of the Karl Heim Society to present a biblical Christian orientation in a world shaped by technology and the natural sciences. Though the contributions are in German, an extensive summary in English is appended to each of them.

People form attachments to their home, their neighbourhood and environment, to the region and nation to which they belong. They express feelings about space and place, especially so in 'globalized times'. In religious studies, in theology, and in education, there is a growing interest in spatial theories either as constructed within national borders, or within international and transnational spaces. The 'spatial turn' has become an acknowledged term in interdisciplinary discourses. Although every practice of religious education is situated and contextually dependent, religious education (RE) research until now has not systematically paid attention to this fundamental insight. This volume is devoted specifically to clarifying the close relationship between RE practice and spatial and situational conditions. After clarifying the main concepts in Part 1, Part 2 includes chapters related to classroom studies, while Part 3 focuses on studies about teachers of religious education. Part 4 contains studies beyond the classroom, such as school chapels, churches, and 'inner space'. All contributions to this volume were developed in the context of the European Network for Religious Education through Contextual Approaches (ENRECA) which has focused recently on the central issue of space and place.
