In 1988, Mary Ellen Mark first published her poignant document of a fiercely independent group of homeless and troubled youth who made their way on the streets of Seattle as pimps, prostitutes, panhandlers, and small-time drug dealers. Streetwise received critical acclaim for its honest portrayal of life on the streets and introduced us to individuals who were not easily forgotten, including "Tiny" (Erin Charles)--a thirteen-year-old prostitute with dreams of a horse farm, diamonds and furs, and a baby of her own. Since meeting Tiny thirty years ago, Mark has continued to photograph her, creating what has become one of Mark's most significant and long-term projects. Now forty-three, Tiny has ten children and her life has unfolded in unexpected ways, which together speak to issues of poverty, class, race, addiction, and other ongoing and pressing issues. Aperture is pleased to release a significantly expanded iteration of this classic monograph, presenting the iconic work of the first edition along with Mark's moving and intimate body of work on Tiny, most of which is previously unpublished. Texts and captions are drawn from conversations between Tiny and Mary Ellen Mark, as well as with Mark's husband, the filmmaker Martin Bell, who made the landmark film, Streetwise. Tiny: Streetwise Revisited provides a powerful education about one of the more complex sides of American life, as well as insight into the unique relationship sustained between artist and subject for over thirty years.

In "The Photography Workshop Series," Aperture Foundation works with the world's top photographers to distill their creative approaches, teachings and insights on photography-offering the workshop experience in a book. The goal is to inspire photographers of all levels who wish to improve their work, as well as readers interested in deepening their understanding of the art of photography. Each volume is introduced by a student of the featured photographer. In this book, Mary Ellen Mark (born 1940)-well known for the emotional power of her pictures, be they of people or animals-offers her insight on observing the world and capturing dramatic moments that reveal more than the reality at hand. Through words and pictures, she shares her own creative process and discusses a wide range of issues, from gaining the trust of the subject and taking pictures that are controlled but unforced, to organizing the frame so that every part contributes toward telling the story.

Mary Ellen Mark on the Portrait and the Moment

Acclaimed American documentary photographer Mary Ellen Mark made her first iconic photographs when living in Turkey on a Fulbright Fellowship in the mid-1960s. Her pictures of Bombay brothels, shot in the late 1970s, were published in 1981 in Falkland Road, a book that became legendary and confirmed her status as one of the most prominent and provocative documentary photographers working today. This book presents for the first time a selection of the strongest pictures of Mark's forty-year career, drawing from emblematic series such as "Falkland Road," "Indian Circus," and "Twins," as well as many previously unpublished images. The photographs are accompanied by an introduction by Weston Naef and a text by Mark that provides context and behind-the-scene anecdotes. Together her images and words provide intimate insights into the lives of others, presenting compelling stories of human strength and suffering.

The Photo Essay

This volume - investigating the work of a particular photographer, in this case, Mary Ellen Mark - comprises a 4000-word essay by an expert in the field, 55 photographs presented chronologically, each with a commentary, and a biography of the featured photographer.

"Mary Ellen Mark fell in love with the Indian circus in 1969, during her first trip to India. As she watched a huge hippopotamus walk around the ring with its mouth wide open, wearing a pink tutu, she was struck by the beauty and innocence of the show.
