Xerxes regeerde van 486 tot 465 voor onze jaartelling over het grote Perzische rijk en verkeerde een groot deel van zijn koningschap in oorlog met de Grieken. Zijn invasie van Griekenland liep na aanvankelijke successen uit op een fiasco. Hij verloor zijn vloot voor de kust van Athene en zijn legers leden een nederlaag in midden-Griekenland. Wij kennen Xerxes vooral uit de Griekse en Romeinse literatuur. Daarin staat hij te boek als een excentrieke, arrogante, en zelfingenomen koning, die dacht dat hij de Grieken met een groot leger kon onderwerpen, maar het deksel op de neus kreeg. Dit beeld is echter eenzijdig en vertekend door literaire conventies en een slecht begrip van het Perzische koningschap. De auteurs in deze bundel onderwerpen het Xerxesportret aan een kritische analyse en betrekken daarbij recente inzichten over het Perzische rijk, en naast literaire ook archeologische en documentaire bronnen. Ook besteden zij aandacht aan de receptie van Xerxes in oost en west.
