This is a translation of Sophia Tolstoy's short story, "Who's to Blame?" which resulted from Leo Tolstoy's discussion of marriage, male sexuality, adultery, and jealousy in his 1888 novel 'Th Kreutzer Sonata'. Maureen Cote's introduction to her translation contains newly translated material, with new facts about the realities of the Tolstoy's unhappy marriage that refute the longstanding myth that the first fifteen years of their marriage were happy.
