Nabokov ne manquait jamais une occasion de railler Freud, le charlatan viennois qui, à ses yeux, avait le tort de tout ramener au sexe et a feint de considérer le sexe comme " une platitude ", déclarant avec une certaine dose de mauvaise foi : " Laissons tomber le sexe ! " Les spécialistes de Nabokov n'ont donc jamais osé violer l'interdit édicté par le maître et se sont contentés, pour la plupart, d'annoter l'œuvre à l'infini. Certes, Nabokov n'a rien d'un pornographe : il utilise le sexe comme un " auxiliaire de l'art ", le désir devenant le moteur principal de la relation esthétique dans ses romans. Le désir dont il fait l'anatomie n'est pas simple besoin, ni demande : c'est un absolu qui passe par le défié des névroses et des perversions et s'accompagne bien souvent d'une cruauté inouïe. Même dans Ada, ce roman où le merveilleux côtoie la science-fiction, l'amour fusionnel entre un frère et sœur se nourrit de la torture infligée à leur demi-sœur. Cet essai, qui s'articule autour de concepts empruntés à la théorie freudienne et lacanienne, constitue donc la première lecture psychanalytique des romans de Nabokov. Il examine avec minutie un certain nombre de passages que la critique, faute d'audace ou d'outils appropriés, avait passés sous silence, faisant ainsi apparaître " une figure dans le tapis " qui est loin d'avoir la sérénité olympienne, mâtinée de métaphysique, que les exégètes anglophones ont trop souvent cherché à promouvoir.

Nabokov, ou, La cruauté du désir

Nabokov gained international fame with Lolita, a highly erotic and morally disturbing novel. Yet, he said in an interview: 'Let us skip sex!' a recommendation that most of his best exegetes followed all too readily. Through its comprehensive study of the amorous and sexual behaviours of Nabokov's characters this book shows how Eros, both as a clown or a pervert, contributes to the poetic excellence of his novels and accounts for the unfolding of the plots. Nabokov presented a whole spectrum of sexual behaviours ranging from standard to perverse, either sterile like bestiality, sexual lethargy or sadism, or poetically creative, like homosexuality, nympholeptcy and incest. He made countless statements about Lolita and his other novels to deny that he was interested in sex; the epilogue shows him battling with censorship and self-censorship, a strategy which indirectly contributes to outlining his authorial figure in the reader's mind.

In the early 1980s Donald Barthelme was widely recognized in the United States as one of the major figures in contemporary postmodernism, a key and central experimental writer. In this study, originally published in 1982, two leading critics present Donald Barthelme's work in its most radical and innovative aspects. Their essay combines textual analysis, critical theory and cultural awareness and aims at investigating the impact of Barthelme's fictions on the reader and at defining the type of reading experience and pleasure such fictions can produce. Included in the aspects of Donald Barthelme's work discussed here are his use of language, his sense of comedy, his parody, his vision of the modern self as fragmented and displaced, and his relation to psychoanalysis and other forms of art.
