The Chinese Republican period, often seen as representing a continuum between Imperial China and the People's Republic of China, was shaped by profound upheavals that also impacted strongly on gender relations. This volume presents the latest research on the situation of women during the Republican period, placing it in historical perspective. In addition to contributions dealing with theoretical and methodological approaches to China-related women's research, a broad spectrum of experiences and discourses related to women in China is also considered: women and the state/women and the nation; political women and their posthumous careers; little traditions and discourses of otherness; women in social and economic life; and women's education. Mechthild Leutner is professor of Chinese studies at the Freie Universitt in Berlin. Nicola Spakowski is a professor at the International University in Bremen.

This book offers research on state and society in Republican China, exploring various aspects of Republican history from the governance perspective. Governance is understood in a broader sense as interactions between state and society, including both the discursive process of social decision-making and the provision of (non-)material public goods. The topics highlighted are: the internationalization of disaster relief, the philanthropic governance of overseas Chinese in Xiamen, the transformation of the cultural group "World Society," historical writing, intellectual autonomy, as well as the construction of warlord identity. Based mainly on Russian and Chinese archival sources that have become available only since the early 1990s, the authors of this collection explore the main aspects of the Chinese Revolution in the crucial period of the 1920s, such as the United Front policy, the development of communism, the Guomindang perspective, institutional issues and social movements. The various approaches and interpretative methods employed by the contributors from seven countries have resulted in a collection of articles representing four very different and until now almost independent discourses: the European, the American, the Chinese, and the Russian.

Networks ranging from village level to transnational level have always played a crucial role in Chinese society. The contributors to this volume aim to trace the interaction between various networks which have existed from the 19th century to the present day. The articles deal with theoretical concepts, historical examples, such as non-state responses to the North China Famine (1876 - 1879), the role of missionaries in the modernization of China and disaster management, including recent inter-ethnic business competition in Hong Kong, Han settlers in Xinjiang, temple festivals in Macau and urban migrants' social networks in today's China. By drawing on new material and theoretical frameworks, these studies shed fresh light on the ways in which various forms of networks have shaped Chinese society, while at the same time questioning traditional and rigid perspectives of Chinese society based solely on networks and guanxi.

The rapidly changing role of China - once an isolated pariah state, now a G-20 member and an emerging superpower in Asia and beyond - is one of the factors to be considered in any conceptualization of the current state of global affairs. The articles in this issue offer preliminary insights into the expansive topic of China's diversified economic, political and cultural interactions with the world. U.S. policies towards Tibet during the Cold War period are examined as well as current global Chinese business networks, China's foreign policy in the 21st century, and the developing relations between China and the five Central Asian states. Jens Damm is an Associate Professor at Chang Jung University, Tainan. He is currently leading a three-year research project at the Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Mechthild Leutner is Professor emerita of Modern Chinese History and Culture at Freie Universitaet Berlin. Niu Dayong is a Professor of the History Department, Peking University. His research is mainly focused on the interactions between China and foreign powers in recent decades.

China's Interaction with the World

The articles in this issue deal with various aspects of the on-going re-evaluation and reconsideration of the far-reaching political, economic and ideological transformation of China in the 1950s, exploring the broader themes in various subfields and from different perspectives. There is a special focus on specific developments in the early 1950s: on land reform and the significance of this for the political consolidation of the new People's Republic, on state violence and mass crimes; on the state discourse on housewives and housework; on the establishment of Chinese as a foreign language at Peking University from the perspective of an eye-witness. Two studies deal with developments in the field of historiography: the first analyses the discussions of Chinese intellectuals in the late 1950s who were seeking to establish historical legitimacy; the second highlights recent debates among historians and intellectuals who have been creating new master narratives and have been involved, in pluralistic terms, in newly constructing the history of the 1950s, especially with regard to the Great Leap Forward and the 1957 Anti-Rightist Movement.

This volume deals with the integration of modern China into processes of global exchange and cross-border interaction. The articles explore the broader theme in different ways and in different subfields, ranging from the history of political ideas to the history of institutions, from global migration of people to the transmigration of academic discourses. Focusing on modern as well as contemporary periods, the studies demonstrate that China in the course of the twentieth century became an ever more important nodal point in a complex set of worldwide networks and engagements. The integration into global networks, together with the global consciousness that corresponded with it, made possible significant connections transcending national borders. The essays also show that the effects could be homogenizing (or globalizing), but at the same time the growing interactions also produced opposition and fragmentation.
