The interviews reveal Ando's central belief that architecture is all about creating "exquisite and wonderful memories" which come about when a building allows its occupants to connect with themselves and make their intellectual dreams become possible. Ando also recognizes that the creation of such memories must involve the architect taking risks; in the case of Fort Worth, the building's double skin of concrete encased in a glass-skin box is entirely new. These concepts are discussed not only within the specific context of the Fort Worth building, but also within the context of Ando's wider underlying philosophy and beliefs.

This book accompanies and celebrates the inaugural exhibition at the new Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, designed by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando. The central subject of and impetus for this building from the beginning has been art, with particular emphasis on the display of the permanent collection. Of the 153,000 square feet of space to support space that emphasizes art like few museums in the world. That the first exhibition in these pristine galleries is devoted to the collection is a testament of pride and priority. Works by approximately 150 artists, covering a wide range of movements, especially postwar Abstract Expressionism, Pop art, and Minimalism, are currently displayed over the Museum's three two-story gallery pavilions. Together they present a broad range of styles and media, from oil, acrylic, and mixed-media paintings and drawings to photography, sculpture, installation art, and video and digital imagery. In honor of the Museum's 110th anniversary, 110 of these artists have been chosen for inclusion in this publication. Each artist's work is presented in the form of a large color plate and a detailed text entry, together with footnotes and key artist information. A selection of the artists - notably Philip Guston, Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter, and Robert Motherwell - are presented in the form of extended monographic essays, accompanied by up to eight works, as a reflection of their importance in the Museum's permanent collection and their wider importance in the development of postwar art.

Explore Mark Bradford's career through his storied End Papers works. Drawing on the diverse cultural and geographic makeup of his South Los Angeles community, Mark Bradford is known for his wall-size collages and installations from scavenged materials. These artworks are responses to the impromptu networks--underground economies, migrant communities, or popular appropriation of abandoned public space--that emerge within a city. This book focuses on some of Bradford's earliest works which take the form of subtle abstract collages made from end papers, small translucent paper that protects hair from overheating, which he learned to use while working as a hairdresser in his mother's salon. Part painting and part collage, the colored End Papers works feature grids that contain various hues that pulsate across the surface. Begun when he was a student at the California Institute of Art in the 1990s, the End Paper paintings were the beginning of his process of combining paper and paint. Bradford said recently, "I learned my own way of constructing paintings through the End Papers--how to create space, how to use color. And how to provide a new kind of content. They were the beginning for me." The exhibition and book examine the use of end papers as a fundamental motif in Bradford's career and how he has returned to it in the past two decades. The essay by Auping discusses how these early works led to his use of merchant's posters, broadsides, and even billboards he found in downtown Los Angeles to make his paintings.
