Big Data powers the modern world. With tools like FitBit tracking our every step and supercomputers like IBM’s Watson helping Memorial Sloan Kettering treat cancer patients, we literally live it. Data is part of our everyday lives through social media profiles, browsing histories and discount programs. Big companies are collecting and using this information, too, and it can both help and hurt. Maybe we start making better choices about the food we eat or the money we spend. Or maybe an insurance company decides to increase its rate or even terminate a policy because it projects we’ll have diabetes in 18 months. We believe many folks want to learn more about these issues but are turned off by coverage that can be dense and jargon-laden. So we made a comic! What do we gain from Big Data? What do we lose? Co-produced by reporter Michael Keller and cartoonist Josh Neufeld, we hope this graphic novella will give you a good foundation to start asking your own questions. Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 186. Amazonia and Global Change synthesizes results of the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA) for scientists and students of Earth system science and global environmental change. LBA, led by Brazil, asks how Amazonia currently functions in the global climate and biogeochemical systems and how the functioning of Amazonia will respond to the combined pressures of climate and land use change, such as Wet season and dry season aerosol concentrations and their effects on diffuse radiation and photosynthesis Increasing greenhouse gas concentration, deforestation, widespread biomass burning and changes in the Amazonian water cycle Drought effects and simulated drought through rainfall exclusion experiments The net flux of carbon between Amazonia and the atmosphere Floodplains as an important regulator of the basin carbon balance including serving as a major source of methane to the troposphere The impact of the likely increased profitability of cattle ranching. The book will serve a broad community of scientists and policy makers interested in global change and environmental issues with high-quality scientific syntheses accessible to nonspecialists in a wide community of social scientists, ecologists, atmospheric chemists, climatologists, and hydrologists.

Bachelorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2017 im Fachbereich Medien / Kommunikation - Film und Fernsehen, Note: 1,1, Hochschule Mittweida (FH), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Anhand der deutschen Late Night-Sidekicks werden in dieser Arbeit Herbert Feuerstein, Manuel Andrack, Elton, sowie die Sidekicks von Jan Böhmermann und Pierre M. Krause analysiert. Ziel ist es, die Charakteristika des Typus Sidekick zu erarbeiten. Mit der Oliver Pocher Show und Anke Late Night mit Anke Engelke werden deutsche Late Night Shows ohne Sidekick gegenübergestellt, um die Inszenierungen zu vergleichen. „Ich hab mich nicht als Bühnenfigur, nicht als Präsentator, nicht als in der Rolle des Punchingballs gesehen. Sondern meine Rolle war, keine Rolle zu haben.“ Manuel Andrack spricht von seiner Rolle als Sidekick. Ein Sidekick ist ein fester Bestandteil einer Late Night Show. Die großen Late Night Hosts in den USA werden allesamt von mindestens einem unterstützenden Sidekick flankiert. Manuel Andrack definierte seine Rolle offensichtlich darin, dass er im Grunde keine Rolle spielte. Doch was ist die Rolle des Sidekicks einer Late Night Show überhaupt? Welche Aufgaben, welche Funktionen übernimmt er? Die Forschungsfrage besteht darin, anhand der Eigenschaften eines Sidekicks zu eruieren, wie relevant dieser für den Erfolg der Sendung ist. Als Ergebnis der Analyse wird abschließend ein Klassifikationsmodell gezeichnet, welches die Eigenschaften eines Sidekick-Charakters zusammenfasst. Dieses erstellte Modell ermöglicht künftig, Sidekick-Typen auf ihre Funktionsfähigkeit hin zu überprüfen. Das Modell umfasst neun Kriterien. Dazu zählen: „Ansprechpartner“, „Dienende Position“, „Identifikationsfigur“, „Untergebenheit“, „Selbstironie“, „Schlagfertigkeit“, „Off-Lacher“, „Mäßigen“ und „Mediales Auftreten“. Erfüllt der Sidekick alle neun Kategorien, so gilt er theoretisch als der „ideale Sidekick“ einer Late Night Show. Diese Bachelorarbeit ist insbesondere für eine Late Night-affine Leserschaft, aber darüber hinaus auch im Allgemeinen für eine fernsehschaffende oder fernsehsehende Zielgruppe geeignet.

Urban Grids: Handbook for Regular City Design' is the result of a five-year design research project undertaken by professor Joan Busquets and Dingliang Yang at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. The research that is the foundation for this publication emphasizes the value of open forms for city design, a publication that specifically insists that the grid has the unique capacity to absorb and channel urban transformation flexibly and productively. 'Urban Grids' analyzes cities and urban projects that utilize the grid as the main structural device for allowing rational development, and goes further to propose speculative design projects capable of suggesting new urban paradigms drawn from the grid as a design tool. Consisting of six major parts, it is divided into the following topics: 1) the atlas of grid cities, 2) grid projects through history, 3) the 20th-century dilemma, 4) the atlas of contemporary grid projects, 5) projective tools for the future, and 6) goodgrid city as an open form coping with new urban issues.
