DURFEE, for the editors of American University Publications in Philosophy EDITORS' PREFACE While the literature on the psychology of creativity is substantial, surprisingly little attention has been paid to the subject by philos ophers in recent years. This fact is no doubt owed in 'part to the legacy of positivism, whose tenets have included a sharp distinction between what Hans Reichenbach called the context of discovery and the context of justification. Philosophy in this view must address itself to the logic of justifying hypotheses; little of philo sophical importance can be said about the more creative business of discovering them. That, positivism has held, is no more than a merely psychological question: since there is no logic of discovery or creation, there can be no philosophical reconstruction of it.

The Greater Philadelphia Philosophy Consortium was launched in the early eighties. It began during a particularly lean period in the American economy. But its success is linked as much to the need to be in touch with the rapidly changing currents of the philosophical climate as with the need to insure an adequately stocked professional community in the Philadelphia area faced, perhaps permanently, with the threat of increasing attrition. The member schools of the Consortium now include Bryn Mawr College, the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, and Villanova University, that is, the schools of the area that offer advanced degrees in philosophy. The philosophy faculties of these schools form the core of the Consortium, which offers graduate students the instructional and library facilities of each member school. The Consortium is also supported by the associated faculties of other regional schools that do not offer advanced degrees - notably, those at Drexel University, Haverford College, La Salle University, and Swarthmore College - both philosophers and members of other departments as well as interested and professionally qualified persons from the entire region. The affiliated and core professionals now number several hundreds, and the Consortium's various ventures have been received most enthusiastically by the academic community. At this moment, the Consortium is planning its fifth year of what it calls the Conferences on the Philosophy of the Human Studies.

Is there a single right interpretation for such cultural phenomena as works of literature, visual artworks, works of music, the self, and legal and sacred texts? In these essays, almost all written especially for this volume, twenty leading philosophers pursue different answers to this question by examining the nature of interpretation and its objects and ideals. The fundamental conflict between positions that universally require the ideal of a single admissible interpretation (singularism) and those that allow a multiplicity of some admissible interpretations (multiplism) leads to a host of engrossing questions explored in these essays: Does multiplism invite interpretive anarchy? Can opposing interpretations be jointly defended? Should competition between contending interpretations be understood in terms of (bivalent) truth or (multivalent) reasonableness, appropriateness, aptness, or the like? Is interpretation itself an essentially contested concept? Does interpretive activity seek truth or aim at something else as well? Should one focus on interpretive acts rather than interpretations? Should admissible interpretations be fixed by locating intentions of a historical or hypothetical creator, or neither? Im Spannungsfeld von Abstinenzparadigma und umstrittener Relevanz der pharmakotherapeutischen Moglichkeiten ist die Debatte um die Rolle der Psychopharmakotherapie bei Abhangigkeitserkrankungen oft ideologisch belastet. Dabei ist der psychopharmakologische Behandlungsanteil - klinisch und wissenschaftlich unbestritten - auch im Rahmen integrierter Therapieprogramme von ausserordentlicher Bedeutung. Die Psychopharmakotherapie ist in den Bereichen Entgiftung, Substitution und Behandlung schwerer psychiatrischer Storungen bei gleichzeitig vorliegender Suchtproblematik (Komorbiditat) unbestritten ein zentrales Element der Behandlung. Die im Moment sehr stark diskutierte und propagierte pharmakologische Therapie des Craving erganzt das mogliche Einsatzspektrum der Pharmakotherapie in dieser Patientengruppe. Trotz aller Kontroversen um den Einsatz von Psychopharmaka ist weitgehend unbestritten, dass sie im Rahmen integrierter Behandlungsansatze auch einen wirkungsvollen Beitrag zur Erlangung langerfristiger Stabilisierung und Abstinenz leisten konnen.
