Der Hauptfokus des Buches sind die im Titel genannten Räume in Bezug auf das System der Atlantic slavery. Ich verstehe unter Atlantic slavery bzw. Atlantic slaveries sowohl die Sklaverei-Regimes an Land in Afrika und in Amerika, inclusive Inseln, wie auch Versklavung und Transport zu Land und zu Wasser sowie den Sklavenhandel auf dem Atlantik. Die drei territorialen Hauptelemente, vulgo Kontinente und Ozean, bilden das System Afrika-Atlantik-Amerikas (AAA). Europa spielte auch eine Rolle. Das Wesentliche war aber die Süd-Süd-Komponente, die vor allem unter iberischer Kontrolle stand (ca. 7 Millionen Versklavte aus Afrika von insgesamt rund 11 Millionen in die Amerikas Verschleppter). Das ist das strukturell-anthropologische Hauptproblem; das qualitative, aber auch chronologisch-historische, Hauptproblem ist die Bedeutung von AAA für die Geschichte der Moderne und des Kapitalismus.

Parallel to the abolition of Atlantic slavery, new forms of indentured labour stilled global capitalism's need for cheap, disposable labour. The famous 'coolie trade' - mainly Asian labourers transferred to French and British islands in the Indian Ocean, Australia, Indonesia, South Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas, as well as to Portuguese colonies in Africa - was one of the largest migration movements in global history. Indentured contract workers are perhaps the most revealing example of bonded labour in the grey area between the poles of chattel slavery and 'free' wage labour. This interdisciplinary volume addresses historically and regionally specific cases of bonded labour relations from the 18th century to sponsorship systems in the Arab Gulf States today.

Michael Zeuske hat sein Standardwerk für die zweite Auflage komplett überarbeitet und aktualisiert sowie deutlich erweitert. Die Geschichte der Sklaverei wird in diesem Handbuch erstmalig in globalgeschichtlicher Perspektive systematisch dargestellt. Ausgangspunkt ist ein Verständnis von Sklaverei als Kapitalisierung menschlicher Körper. Analysiert werden die unterschiedlichsten Formen, Typen und Entwicklungsepochen (Plateaus) von Sklavereien und Menschenhandelssystemen – auf allen Kontinenten, Ozeanen und Meeren, in ihrer jeweiligen Benennung und ihrem historisch-kulturellen Kontext. Auf breiter empirischer Basis entsteht auf diese Weise eine Geschichte der Sklaverei, die ca. 10.000 v. u. Z. begann und bis in die heutige Zeit andauert.

Michael Zeuske betrachtet den transatlantischen Sklavenhandel (1450-1900), mit Blick auf den historischen Ort des Atlantiks sowie diebeteiligten Institutionen und Akteure (vor allem auch in den nicht-europäischen Herkunfts- und Zielgesellschaften). Ein Schwerpunkt liegt auchauf dem Handel des hidden Atlantic des 19. Jahrhunderts, als die Europäer und Amerikaner den transatlantischen Sklavenhandel bereits verboten hatten.
