At the instigation of her first husband, Guy Debord, Bernstein agreed to write a potboiler to help swell the Situationist International's coffers. When she objected to the idea of practicing a "dead art," Debord suggested that it would be instead be détournement--the Situationist reuse of media toward different, subversive, ends. Inspired by the pseudo-scandalous success of Roger Vadim's filmed version of Choderlos de Laclos's Les Liaisons dangereuses and the adolescent Françoise Sagan's bestselling novel Bonjour tristesse, Bernstein lampooned and borrowed from both Sagan and de Laclos, concocting a roman à clef that succeeded on several levels. A moneymaker for the most radical front of the French avant-garde, the novel (by its very success) demonstrated the bankruptcy of contemporary French letters and the Situationist contempt for the psychological novel, while (perhaps unintentionally) holding up a playful mirror to the private lives of two of the Situationist International's most important members.All the King's Horses is a slippery rewrite of Dangerous Liaisons with Debord playing the role of cold libertine, Bernstein as his cohort, and disguised walk-on roles by the likes of the painter Asger Jorn and others. Though Greil Marcus sparked interest in this novel in his 1989 book Lipstick Traces, All the King's Horses remained unavailable until its 2004 republication in France. This Semiotext(e) edition is its first translation into English.

After The Night is about London in 2013. Or, more accurately, certain quarters in the east: Hoxton, Shoreditch, De Beauvoir, Dalston. Or perhaps it's simply a joke: even more of a joke than La Nuit, the novel it is based on. If so, it may be one that comes at the expense of its protagonists.

Ce roman est l'histoire de Gilles et des possibilités qu'il rencontre : de la fatigue qui les emporte. C'est l'avance, à travers un morceau du temps, de personnages qui vont tous vers un échec semblable, qui ne sont pas reconnus. La désinvolture n'est qu'à la surface de ce livre. Sa discrétion se masque en une sécheresse que la lecture attentive dément. La pudeur cache une sensibilité et même une souffrance réelles. De quoi s'occupe Gilles, qui apparemment ne fait rien "De la réification", dit-il. Et c'est ce personnage du roman qui remarque qu'il n'est que personnage roman, en une page étonnante qui sera légitimement tenue pour un sommet de la rigueur de l'écriture moderne, dans son témoignage d'une crise générale de la communication. Tout le monde connaît, depuis quelques années déjà, le ton et le contour des romans consacrés à l'amoralisme d'une jeunesse oisive et désenchantée. Dernier venu de la série, celui-ci ne se fait remarquer qu'en accumulant à l'excès toutes les conventions du genre. Geneviève, la narratrice, cédera-t-elle au charme de la toute jeune maîtresse que son mari affectueux l'invite à partager, ou préférera-t-elle garder son amant, ou enfin choisir ? une autre amante ? Voilà le centre de la pauvre intrigue qui se déroule complaisamment, sur la Rive de Gauche et la Côte d'Azur bien sûr, tout au long d'une beuverie ininterrompue. L'auteur, qui manque visiblement de conviction, y supplée par quelques habiletés subalternes.
