The new volume in the series “Imagine Math” is intended to contribute to grasping how much that is interesting and new is happening in the relationships between mathematics, imagination and culture. The present book begins with the connections between mathematics, numbers, poetry and music, with the latest opera by Italian composer Claudio Ambrosini. Literature and narrative also play an important role here. There is cinema too, with the “erotic” mathematics films by Edward Frenkel, and the new short “Arithmétique “ by Munari and Rovazzani. The section on applications of mathematics features a study of ants, as well as the refined forms and surfaces generated by algorithms used in the performances by Adrien Mondot and Claire Bardainne. Nel gennaio 2005, scrivendo queste parole, diventa di grande e drammatica attualità l’utilizzo dei modelli matematici per la meteorologia. Prevedere per salvare. Non poteva mancare Venezia. Il vetro, le murrine, grazie alla fantastica collezione di Giovanni Sarpellon. E di quarta dimensione, di rendere visibile l’invisibile. E alla fine, un poco di magia, grazie a Bustric. Negli ultimi anni le immagini hanno giocato un ruolo molto importante in molti settori dell'attività umana. Anche in matematica l'uso di strumenti informatici con elevate capacità grafiche si sta diffondendo sempre di più. Il volume è il risultato del congresso che si è tenuto a Bologna nell'ottobre 2000 che ha voluto riunire alcuni esperti nell'uso delle immagini. Sia coloro che realizzano gli strumenti tecnici che consentono poi di gestire la computer graphics, sia coloro che le immagini le utilizzano. Non solo quindi matematica, tecnica e computer graphics, ma anche i legami con l'arte e soprattutto con il cinema. Una larga parte del libro è dedicata infatti ai rapporti tra matematica e cinema, con articoli di registi, attori, sceneggiatori e matematici che hanno partecipato alla rassegna di film che si è tenuta a Bologna per due mesi.

Si parla di fumetti nel libro del 2004 con quella che sta diventando una tradizione con il fumetto stile Disney del 2003 e del grafico olandese Maurits Cornelis Escher, anzi si "vedono" alcune delle immagini che sono state realizzate in animazione. Si parla del sogno di un uomo, di Gaudì, della grande ambizione di ascendere verso il cielo con la cattedrale di Barcellona; di come quel sogno si stia realizzando. Di teatro, di cinema si parla, ovviamente. Dell’interessante spettacolo di Luca Viganò e del teatro di Genova su Evariste Galois. E anche della America ́s Cup, di come dei matematici abbiano contribuito alla vittoria della barca Svizzera nella più importante avventura velica del mondo. Si parla di guerra e di pace, un argomento che non cessa mai di essere attuale. Inoltre, un omaggio al matematico Ennio De Giorgi che avrebbe dovuto essere il primo oratore del primo convengo di "Matematica e cultura". Una avventura dunque nella matematica che continua...

In questo nuovo libro, il decimo della serie iniziata a Venezia con gli incontri “Matematica e cultura” che tanti hanno cercato di imitare, si parla di tutto questo e tra gli altri ne scrivono Simon Singh (autore del best seller “L’ultimo teorema di Fermat”), alla sua terza presenza a Venezia, e Siobhan Roberts (autrice di “Il re dello spazio infinito. Storia dell’uomo che salvò la geometria”). Venezia ponte tra la matematica e la cultura.
