A collection of essays analyzing the events leading to the partition of India and to the birth of Pakistan, this book argues against the theory that "Muslim separatism" was the cause behind the cataclysmic event, India's partition, and the subsequent birth of the two nations. Hasan outlines the reasons behind the sudden rise of the Muslim League from a relatively insignificant position to that of being the strongest representative of the Muslim community in India. He ascribes it to a series of miscalculations on the part of the ministries with the League and its claim of being the sole mouthpiece of the Indian Nationalist opinion. The first four chapters of the book include extracts from the speeches and writings of Nehru, Jinnah, Azad, and Gandhi. Then there are essays, by noted historians in the field, which look at issues such as the political representation of Muslims; the organization and groups and of the rural elite in local and national level politics; the constitutional design and personal charisma of Jinnah in relation to the demand for Pakistan; and the rejection of "community consciousness" among Muslims as the driving force behind the formation of Pakistan.

Set in the context of the grant of Diwani to the British in India, Images of the West, offers fresh insights on the state and everyday life in England discussing questions of religious controversies, military, and law. Its author also gives us a panoramic view of the socio-cultural life, flora and fauna, and education and lifestyles. Abu Taleb s travelogue provides a non-Western representation of the West, sheds light on the national customs and manners of Europeans. Westward Bound, comprises his impressions of England, France, Genoa, Malta, Turkey, and Baghdad during his travels (1799 1803). His understanding of cultural streams in the East and West provide an alternative viewpoint on the encounter between Pax Brittanica and the sharif families of North India. Seamless Boundaries presents the autobiography of Lutfullah Khan, one of the earliest known works by an Indian in English. Traversing geographical and cultural boundaries, Lutfullah s narrative defies conventional labels. He explores events, people, and their culture beyond the mere east-west dichotomies. He also presents a graphic account of his voyage to England in 1844. Mushirul Hasan s introduction explores the life and times of these travellers. Arguing for exploring the West and the Muslim societies from an unsentimental and wide-ranging perspective, he investigates the discourse on East-West relations, and highlights the significance of travel narratives as historical records in the production of knowledge.

As the first volume of a new CEU Press series, this book studies the history and hermeneutics of Holy Scriptures when book printing started to in?uence the dissemination of knowledge in the Orthodox-Christian and the Muslim world. The printing of these texts cannot be considered as mere technical innovation of reproduction. Since printing required special knowledge and allowed a much wider circulation, it triggered a debate among the religious elites and in their societies about fundamental dilemmas. Who is allowed to have access to Holy Scriptures? What does it mean that people not belonging to the religious elite will be able to read sacred texts? If a broad circulation is technically feasible, why should not texts in the canon be printed in the language of the people? How does the "production of meaning" of a sacred text change if it is circulated by means of print?

Making Sense of History

First published in 1937, this magisterial account of India in the 1930s contains the impressions and thoughts of Halide Edib, a Turkish writer who was not interested in imagining, inscribing or inventing India, but rather in documenting its multifaceted personality. Edib's idea of India was firmly anchored in the historical and sociological insights she gained during her stay in the subcontinent, and especially through her meetings with Mahatma Gandhi and other leading figures of the nationalist movement. In this book, she sums up aspects of Indian nationalism, pointing to its strengths and weaknesses, and highlights its encounters with British colonialism. She perceives the idea of pan Islamism with skepticism, and believes that religious identity cannot be defined in isolation since it is also determined by the confluence of cultural ideas and beliefs. In India, for instance, common ideals of citizenship and culture allow a distinct sense of nationhood to exist in separation from the religious lives of its people. An overarching and scholarly Introduction by Mushirul Hasan--supported by two maps, a chronology of events, a genealogy of the Ottoman sultans, and brief biographical notes--allows for a complete reading of the text.
