This is the third volume of Babel & Bibel, an annual of ancient Near Eastern, Old Testament, and Semitic studies. The principal goal of the annual is to reveal the inherent relationship between Assyriology, Semitics, and biblical studies—a relationship that our predecessors comprehended and fruitfully explored but that is often neglected today. The title Babel & Bibel is intended to point to the possibility of fruitful collaboration among the three disciplines, in an effort to explore the various civilizations of the ancient Near East. The tripartite division of Babel & Bibel corresponds to its three principal spheres of interest: ancient Near Eastern, Old Testament, and Semitic studies. Contributions are further subdivided into articles, short notes, and reviews.

Das Buch umfasst 385 Wirtschaftsurkunden aus der Zeit der 3. Dynastie von Ur (ca. 2111-2003 v. Chr.) aus den Sammlungen der St. Petersburger Eremitage. Obwohl alle Tontafeln aus dem Antikenhandel stammen, lasst sich auf Grund inhaltlicher Kriterien eine Herkunft aus der sudmesopotamischen Stadt Umma wahrscheinlich machen, die ein bedeutendes Verwaltungszentrum der neusumerischen Zeit war. Die Texte notieren Vorgange der staatlichen Verwaltung von Landwirtschaft und Handwerk, Handel und Kult und registrieren Ausgaben und Einnahmen von Materialien oder Lebensmitteln, Gestellung von Arbeitskraften etc. Die Publikation der Texte erfolgt in Umschrift (bei unklaren Stellen werden Keilschriftkopien hinzugefugt), so dass auch Nichtassyriologen leicht Zugang zum Verstandnis finden konnen. Der Band wird erschlossen durch ausfuhrliche Indizes aller vorkommenden Lexeme sowie der Gotter-, Orts- und Personennamen. Dabei wird ausserdem auch auf die auf den Tafeln angebrachten Siegelabrollungen und auf die Eigner der Siegel eingegangen.

In July 2007, the 53rd Rencontre Assyriologique Internationale (the annual meeting of the International Association of Assyriologists) was held in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia. In Moscow, several hundred Assyriologists enjoyed the hospitality of the Russian State University for the Humanities. Dozens of papers on the topic “Language in the Ancient Near East,” were delivered at the University. More than 50 of those papers are published in this 2-volume set.

The title Babel und Bibel is intended to point to the possibility of fruitful collaboration among the three disciplines, in an effort to explore the various civilizations of the ancient Near East. This volume is a festschrift for Joachim Krecher, Professor of Assyriology in the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. Krecher is best known, perhaps, for his seminal Sumerische Kultlyrik, published already in 1966. This compendium includes 17 essays by friends and colleagues, all focusing on Sumerian language and literature.
