Née dans une famille juive de Berlin en 1891, Nelly Sachs échappe de justesse aux persécutions nazies et se réfugie en Suède en compagnie de sa mère en 1940. Soumise à l'effroyable pression de l'histoire, elle s'enferme dans le silence puis, après une relecture de la Bible dans la traduction novatrice de Martin Buber et Franz Rosenzweig dont les premiers volumes avaient paru avant la guerre, recommence à écrire à partir de 1943. Naissent alors, le plus souvent la nuit, les poèmes qu'elle rassemble en 1946 sous le titre Dans les demeures de la mort. Elle considérera ce livre, qui la place aussitôt parmi les plus grands poètes de son temps, comme le véritable début de son œuvre, souhaitant laisser dans l'ombre les textes qui l'ont précédé. Il contient une série de poèmes dédiés à un homme dont elle ne dira jamais le nom, son fiancé, mort en camp de concentration. Eclipse d'étoile, qui paraît en 1949, prolonge le recueil précédent par une méditation sur le destin d'Israël, sur la fidélité aux morts, sur la possibilité même de tirer encore une parole du silence après l'épreuve des ténèbres.
