I quickly closed it and felt the radiator: completely cold. I had no idea why Grandpa would have shut off the heat and opened the window. Upstairs I could hear Hugh still calling and opening and closing doors, obviously looking for Grandpa. My sense of dread increased still further, and I was just about to turn around and go upstairs when my eye caught something through the French door into the dining room. It was dark in there, too, but the windows were visible as bright rectangles, and in front of one of them stood a tall, gangly figure. It kind of looked like Grandpa, except I didn''t remember him being that thin. I went and opened the door, but the man by the window didn''t move as I entered the room. I could tell he had his back to me, as though he had gone to look out the window and then fallen into a trance. "Grandpa?" I asked low, not wanting to scare him. No reaction. Suddenly, I got a very strange feeling that the man wasn''t my Grandpa. I know it''s totally silly-I mean, who else could it be? I squinted my eyes in an effort to see his features more clearly, and I realized to my astonishment he was naked except for a pair of white undies. I''m not kidding. I know I should have felt embarrassed, but for some reason it just made me even more uneasy. Something was definitely not right. "Grandpa?" I said, louder. Still, the man didn''t stir. I noticed the faint whisper of the wind blowing through the room, and I noticed the windows in here were also standing ajar. Finally, it dawned on me to turn on the lights. I can''t believe I didn''t think of it earlier, but the situation was just so unreal and I was really confused and scared. I found the switch and flicked it. At long last, the man by the window reacted and started turning slowly around. I gaped at him. It was my Grandpa all right, but I almost didn''t recognize him. His cheeks were hollow, his lips thin and dry, the skin around his eyes was very dark, the eyes themselves were really haunting, being way too dark, like almost black, as though the pupils had grown to blot out the white. There was something strange above his head, too, although it must have been the shadows playing a trick on me-but for a brief second, I could have sworn Grandpa had a couple of branches sticking out of the top of his skull. Yeah, I know. It sounds completely bonkers. It was all over in a blink of an eye, then Grandpa looked exactly like I remembered him-the only odd thing about him being the missing clothes. A sound reaches him, makes him stop dead in his tracks. It''s a wet smacking noise. Like a child eating Bolognese for the first time and making a mess of it. It''s coming from the kitchen. Thomas looks around for a weapon. He didn''t think to bring the pipe. Instead, he grabs a big, pink crystal rock from a shelf. It feels satisfyingly heavy in his hand, giving him the courage to go on towards the opening to the kitchen. A dreadful sight meets him. In the middle of the kitchen, sprawled out on the vinyl floor, is a grown man. His skin is dark and he''s wearing shorts and a T-shirt. The colors of his clothes are hard to discern, as they''re completely soaked with blood. His stomach is open. It reminds Thomas of something he saw in a medical documentary about open heart surgery. Something is hanging out of the side of the crater. It looks like a piece of raw sausage with the filling sucked out of it. The rest of the content of the poor man''s stomach is mercifully hidden from view by the girl who''s sitting on her knees, feasting away. With one hand, she digs eagerly into the man''s intestines, transporting them to her mouth and chewing loudly. The other arm, which is broken, hangs limply by her side. Apparently, this one-armed system isn''t working fast enough to satisfy the girl''s appetite, because suddenly she bends over and simply buries her face in the guy''s stomach. Thomas breathes firmly through his nose--which immediately proves a mistake, as it only intensifies the smell of blood and meat. He knows he needs to move on. That he''s still in a hurry. That the guy on the floor might only be minutes from waking up, and then he''ll have two zombies to deal with. So, he slips through the kitchen as close to the wall as possible. His eyes are fixed on the girl, and that''s why he doesn''t notice the bottle of olive oil lying on the floor. He accidentally kicks it, and it rolls across the floor, hitting the table leg with a loud Clank! Thomas freezes, raising the stone, ready to throw it at the zombie girl. But she doesn''t react at all to the noise; not even a flinch. She just keeps eating. Thomas breathes a sigh of relief. He hurries on. Makes it out of the kitchen and into a hallway. There are a couple of closed doors. At the end is the scullery. He reminds himself about the fact that he can''t know for sure if anyone else is in the house--living or dead. Jennie listede hen til badeværelsesvinduet. Markus lå i badekarret og læste volapyk op fra et stykke krøllet papir. På gulvet stod fire tændte stearinlys og i badevandet flød sorte fjer rundt. Jennies hår på armene rejste sig da hun så hvad Markus havde tegnet på den hvide flisevæg over badekarret: Et stort, mystisk symbol. Og det var tegnet med blod ... Da Jennie og hendes lillebror kommer på ferie hos deres sære mormor i en lille landsby, sker der underlige ting med vejret, dyrene og beboerne, og snart også med Jennie og hendes bror.
