Verdrängt und vergessen sind die Männer und Frauen, die Kinder und Greise, die man hinter Gittern oder Barrieren zur Schau stellte wie Orang-Utans, chinesische Pandabären oder bengalische Tiger. Von Hamburg bis Paris, von London bis Tokio, von Chicago bis Genf strömten Millionen von Menschen in derartige "Völkerschauen" und "Menschenzoos". Dies geschah um die Wende vom 19. zum 20. Jahrhundert - und wirkt bis heute fort. Die Schaulustigen waren fasziniert von diesen "Wilden", die so seltsame Gebräuche hatten. Sie sahen in ihnen nur "Fremde", "Andersartige", angeblich echte "Kannibalen". Die Besucher bemerkten nicht, dass sich die westliche Welt der Schaustellungen bediente, um das eigene Selbstbild zu idealisieren. Denn es ging nicht um eine bereichernde Begegnung zwischen Kulturen, sondern darum, das Überlegenheitsgefühl der "weißen Rasse" zu stärken und die "zivilisierende" Politik der Kolonialmächte zu rechtfertigen. Zudem begegnete man den Fremden oftmals ganz und gar nicht wohltätig. Man ließ sie fieren, blieb oft sogar angesichts der vielen Krankheiten und Todesfälle unter ihnen ungerührt. Schließlich waren es ja nur "Wilde". Hamburg war einer der europäischen Schwerpunkte dieser Entwicklung. Carl Hagenbeck verwirklichte ab 1874 als erster in Europa die Idee einer "anthropologisch-zoologischen Ausstellung". Der Erfolg dieser Veranstaltungen war - auch in finanzieller Hinsicht - so überwältigend, dass man auch anderswo versuchte die Sensationsgier zu bedienen. Völkerschauen und MenschenZoos fanden im deutschen Sprachraum u.a. in Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden, Köln, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Mannheim, München, Wien und Basel statt. Die MenschenZoos trugen auf entscheidende Weise dazu bei, dass sich die rassistische Denkweise der "Wissenschaft vom Menschen" auf breite Bevölkerungskreise ausdehnte. Denn im Gefolge dieses rassistischen Trugbildes von den Fremden, dem die Pseudowissenschaft der damaligen Anthropologie das Denkmäntelchen der Objektivität umgehängt hatte, breitete sich rassistisches Denken unter großen Teilen der Bevölkerung westlicher Staaten aus. Ein Rassismus, der einige Jahrzehnte später schreckliche Folgen haben würde. Die "MenschenZoos" zeigen uns die Entstehung unserer bis heute fortbestehenden Vorurteile und Ängste. Sie zeugen von der Spaltung der Menschheit in einen angeblich höherwertigen und einen angeblich minderwertigen Teil.

This edited collection explores the genesis of scientific conceptions of race and their accompanying impact on the taxonomy of human collections internationally as evidenced in ethnographic museums, world fairs, zoological gardens, international colonial exhibitions and ethnic shows. A deep epistemological change took place in Europe in this domain toward the end of the eighteenth century, producing new scientific representations of race and thereby triggering a radical transformation in the visual economy relating to race and racial representation and its inscription in the body. These practices would play defining roles in shaping public consciousness and the representation of “otherness” in modern societies. The Invention of Race provides contextualization that is often lacking in contemporary discussions on diversity, multiculturalism and race.

This book explores several cultural and historical paths intertwined in the genesis and development of sport and physical activities within colonial and postcolonial contexts. As far as youth organizations and Western-based sports are concerned, the Independencies political split needs to be reconsidered, from a cultural perspective with practices overlapping spatial, chronological and epistemological borders. When looking at the variety of practices, the colonial legacies and the ensuing migration journeys through a global perspective, there is a need to understand the diverse ways of composing and building the postcolonial sport worlds. Multiculturalism (South Africa, France, Algeria), transnational journeys (Pacific Islands), rebuilding of national identities through sporting institutions (Ireland, West Africa), racialization of the society (Rwanda, South Africa), gender control (from the West-East to the North-South gap), sportization of traditional/old games (Americas), and so on. Following the various studies shaping this book, the ambivalence of sporting and physical activities’ paths comes up. It is apparent these trajectories have generated a mixed feeling of adhesion and repulsion towards Western hegemonies in postcolonial societies.

Debates about the legacy of colonialism in France are not new, but they have taken on new urgency in the wake of recent terrorist attacks. Les "zoos humains", symboles oubliés de l'histoire contemporaine, ont été totalement refoulés de notre mémoire collective. Ces exhibitions de "sauvages", aussi bien des "exotiques" que des "monstres", ont pourtant été, en Europe, aux Etats-Unis et au Japon, une étape majeure du passage progressif d'un racisme scientifique à un racisme populaire. Au carrefour du discours savant, des cultures de masse et de l'intérêt des puissances coloniales, ces exhibitions ont touché un peu moins d'un milliard et demi de visiteurs depuis l'exhibition en Europe de la Vénus hottentote, au début du XIXe siècle. Ces exhibitions, peuplées d'êtres difformes et de personnes en provenance des espaces coloniaux d'Afrique, d'Amérique, d'Océanie ou d'Asie, comme appartenant à un univers de l'anormalité, disparaîtront progressivement avec les années 1930, mais elles avaient fait alors leur oeuvre : bâtir deux humanités. Véritable synthèse et ouvrage de référence sur la question, rassemblant les meilleurs spécialistes internationaux, cette nouvelle édition de Zoos humains. Au temps des exhibitions humaines (La Découverte, 2002) est entièrement refondue et largement complétée. Fruit de plus de dix ans de recherches, elle paraît à l'occasion de l'exposition "Exhibitions : l'invention du sauvage", organisée au musée du Quai Branly à Paris.

L’histoire coloniale et postcoloniale fait aujourd’hui débat dans la société française, comme en témoignent les polémiques sur la torture en Algérie, la place de l’histoire coloniale dans le récit national ou la question spécifique des immigrations postcoloniales. Or, l’objet des Postcolonial Studies, c’est précisément de relire l’histoire coloniale et postcoloniale en cherchant à saisir comment la colonisation a profondément affecté les sociétés colonisées, mais aussi les anciennes métropoles et, au-delà, l’ensemble de l’Occident. Comment s’enracine le racisme colonial, dans les colonies et dans les métropoles, et quelles en sont les conséquences contemporaines ? Les rapports géopolitiques et économiques, déjà inégaux durant la colonisation, se reproduisent-ils ?
