Deze herziene druk van dit veel gebruikte studie- en praktijkboek bevat een aantal aanpassingen en uitbreidingen. In het hoofdstuk over onderzoeksstrategieën is het experiment toegevoegd. In de dagelijkse beroepspraktijk van onderwijs of gezondheidszorg wordt niet gauw een (zuiver) experiment opgezet, maar in de geschiedenis van de sociale wetenschappen zijn goed opgezette (quasi)experimenten van grote invloed geweest. Ook is een bespreking van implementatieonderzoek toegevoegd. Goed onderzoek doen is één ding, het implementeren van de resultaten ervan in levensechte situaties is iets heel anders. Op vele maatschappelijke gebieden (gezondheidszorg, onderwijs, bestuur, veiligheid enz.) wordt in toenemende mate de noodzaak gevoeld om zich naast onderzoek ook bezig te houden met het invoeren van de uitkomsten in de praktijk. Verder is de beschrijving van actieonderzoek gewijzigd en aangepast aan nieuwe inzichten. De oorspronkelijke visie van de auteurs op actieonderzoek is niet gewijzigd. Er is een bespreking over gestandaardiseerde toetsen toegevoegd (CITO, algemene intelligentietests, PISA enz.). Zoals zal blijken, spelen zij een belangrijke rol in de verschillende beroeps- en adviespraktijken en zijn hierover opnieuw fundamentele discussies ontstaan. In het hoofdstuk over kwantitatieve analyse is de t-toets toegevoegd. In de praktijk van het kwantitatieve onderzoek is dit een instrument dat goede diensten bewijst, wanneer het gaat om het vergelijken van groepen en het aantonen van effecten van ingrepen of programma’s. Ook is een behandeling van factoranalyse en de analyse van de betrouwbaarheid van meetschalen (Cronbach’s Alpha) toegevoegd. Ten slotte is aan het boek een website gekoppeld die oefenmateriaal bevat voor de kwantitatieve, statistische analyse, waarmee lezers zich kunnen bekwamen in het zelfstandig uitvoeren van dergelijke analyses. Deze website bevat bestanden waarmee de lezer kan werken, alsmede instructieve stap-voor-stap uitwerkingen van de opgaven, in zowel het krachtige SPSS als Excel.

"This volume, the result of four years of work performed by the combined research groups of Utrecht University (Faculty of Humanities) and the HU Utrecht University of Applied Sciences (Faculty of Education), focuses on the central theme of ‘Normative Professionalization’. Drawing on a wide variety of scholars including Hannah Arendt, Gert Biesta, Harry Kunneman, Donald Schön and Chris Argyris, and engaging with professionalism, ethics, virtue and morality, this book builds the argument that learning to deal with complexity supports not only education but the personal development of teachers and the improvement of society and democracy as well. This volume presents research on a broad range of topics such as worldview education, co-teaching, moral authorship, traditional-reform perspectives on education, the discourse on citizenship, teacher education, and the question how to link religion and education. The research chapters explain the theoretical lenses and methodological approaches which have been employed to get a grip on complexity. How to open up spaces to make education more meaningful? The concept of space can involve educational interactions, relationships, contents and other relevant aspects relating to this purpose. The book presents three perspectives to engage in opening up spaces. It empowers pupils, students, and teachers to develop as unique individuals, better relate to the communities and cultural traditions to which they belon, and to develop new visions, understandings, and ways of living. This volume is the result of the search of a number of educational professionals on how to open up spaces to make education more meaningful. The opened spaces involve educational interactions, relationships, contents and other relevant aspects relating to this purpose. The book presents three salient perspectives to engage in this envisioned path. It empowers pupils, students, and teachers to: Develop as unique individuals. This process includes engaging with personal feelings, developing a personal way of thinking and judging, and articulating one’s own voice in relation to others and the specific social context. Relate to the communities and cultural traditions to which they (want to) belong, and to interact with others who may belong to different cultural traditions. Develop new visions, understandings, and ways of living in order to lead a sustainable life within the potential of our eco-system, together with the myriads of other life forms on planet earth.
