The transnational dimensions of North American history attract ever more attention in recent years. Inspired by twenty first-century experiences of global entanglements, an increasing number of scholars set out to explore the past anew. Methods and concepts of this re-orientated U.S. history, however, are still a matter of dispute. This volume submits a theoretically reflected and empirically saturated contribution to this debate. Its contributions explore U.S. history from the margins, discussing topics as diverse as U.S. settler imperialism, technological and intellectual networks, Native American history, or African-American missionaries. They open up new, postcolonial perspectives on North American History, thereby provincializing United States.

A study of the development of prisons, hospitals and insane asylums in America and Europe which grew out of disc ussions between its two editors about their work on the history of hospitals, poor relief, deviance, and crime, and a subsequent conference that attempted to assess the impacts of Foucault and Elias. Seventeen contributors from six different countries with backgrounds in history, sociology and criminology utilize various methodological approaches and reflect the various viewpoints in the theoretical debate over Foucault's work.

Der vorliegende interdisziplinär angelegte Band vereinigt Beiträge von Historiker*Innen, Literaturwissenschaftler*Innen, Soziolog*Innen und Aktivistin*Innen aus dem Bereich der Queer- und Gender Studies. Die Geschichte der Sexualitäten und der Körperpraktiken stehen dabei im Mittelpunkt. In fünf Großkapiteln werden die Komplexe Identitäten, Männlichkeiten, Diskriminierung/Verfolgung, Diskurse und Emanzipation untersucht. Der erforschte Zeitraum reicht von der griechischen Antike bis zur unmittelbaren Gegenwart. Die hier zusammengetragenen Ergebnisse sind das Resultat einer internationalen wissenschaftlichen Konferenz, die anlässlich der Magnus-Hirschfeld-Tage 2014 in Köln stattgefunden hat.
