Trasfondo: oltre il fondo, in sottofondo, doppio fondo. Sono alcuni dei molteplici significati del titolo di questo affascinante romanzo, che ci indica la direzione in cui orientarci nel leggere una storia ispirata a un fatto realmente accaduto. Siamo portati a credere che la verità si trovi sul fondo, celata alla luce del sole. Eppure, secondo l’autrice, nelle profondità appare il falso, l’irreale, così come l’impossibile, il desiderato, il temuto. In altre parole, la finzione. Tramite questo sguardo originale Patricia Ratto si avvicina all’evento assurdo per antonomasia, la guerra, e ne riemerge con un romanzo che racconta il conflitto delle Malvinas dagli abissi, in cui i protagonisti sono costretti a una continua ricostruzione della realtà. Dal sottomarino sconquassato in cui sceglie di calare il suo punto di vista narrativo, l’autrice racconta in maniera superba dinamiche e tempi della realtà militare, incomprensibile per chi la sta vivendo (a maggior ragione se incastrato in una prigione acquatica) e composta da atroci momenti d’azione ma anche e soprattutto da infinita pazienza. Un romanzo sulla guerra e sull’attesa, scritto da una delle voci più potenti della letteratura argentina contemporanea, tradotta in varie lingue e ora finalmente pubblicata anche in Italia.

And in the novella "Submerged," an Argentine submarine crew during the Falklands War of the early 1980s navigates its way through a claustrophobic nightmare of boredom and terror, where the very meaning of being alive is cast in doubt.
