On the occasion of Hermann J. Real's seventy-fifth birthday, this collection honours a scholar whose contagious curiosity has been dedicated to the study of Jonathan Swift's life and works for the past four decades. The contributions cover multiple aspects of the Dean's writings as well as a number of eighteenth-century contexts. They not only celebrate the Director of the Ehrenpreis Centre at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität, Münster, the Editor of the annual Swift Studies, and the convener of six international Münster symposia on the Dean of St Patrick's, but they also pay homage to the mentor, colleague, and friend. At the same time, they reflect the enduring vitality of Swift studies, which it has been one of Hermann J. Real's greatest academic achievements to promote.

The relationship between Latitudinarian moral theology and eighteenth-century literature has been much debated among scholars. However, this issue can only be tackled if the exact objectives of the Latitudinarians' moral theology are clearly delineated. In doing so, Patrick Müller unveils the intricate connection between the didactic bias of Latitudinarianism and the resurgent interest in didactic literary genres in the first half of the eighteenth century. His study sheds new light on the complex and contradictory reception of the Latitudinarians' controversial theses in the work of three of the major eighteenth-century novelists: Henry Fielding, Laurence Sterne, and Oliver Goldsmith.

This book presents human-centered concepts and solutions for mobility, logistics and infrastructure that will make our growing metropolitan areas more livable and sustainable.The still accelerating megatrend of urbanization is leading to constantly growing metropolitan areas. This creates a whole series of challenges for municipalities, as well as citizens, such as overcrowded traffic routes, limited building space and an increasingly difficult supply situation. Recent decades have seen a rise in the significance of governance layers beyond the nation state and even Europe. Nonetheless, few efforts have been made thus far to systematically examine the EU’s interaction with global policy regimes. This book maps the relative importance of EU policies in the multi-level global governance system, in comparison with national and global activities. It provides a unique comparative analysis of the EU’s capacity for projecting its policies outward. Focusing on trade policy, agriculture, food safety, competition, social rights, environmental policy, transport, migration, nuclear non-proliferation, or financial regulation, each chapter contributes to a better understanding of the EU’s role in shaping global policies, the mechanisms it uses and the conditions leading to success or failure. The contributors’ comparative research highlights that policy export is a demanding phenomenon that faces severe limitations and frequently comes with drawbacks. Still, EU policy export played a key role in shaping the rules of the global trade regime and influenced global policy outcomes – at least to a minor extent or in technical aspects – in the majority of the covered policy areas. Overall however, this book reveals that the EU not only aims to export its policies, but interacts with its global environment in a number of distinct ways, including policy import and policy protection, to shield it from global pressures. Concluding with a comparison of all policies on the meta-level and relevant policy recommendations, this book will be of interest to students, scholars and practitioners of European politics, European public policy, global governance and international relations.

Jahrhunderts, Note: 1,0, Johannes Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Mit dem Philosophen Descartes verbindet man im allgemeinen als erstes das Cogito-Argument und dementsprechend viele Interpretationen finden sich zu dem Thema. Bei dem Text von Kemmerling tauchen jedoch zwei interessante Punkte auf: Zum einen wird deutlich, dass das Cogito-Argument am Ende der 2. Meditation noch einen, wenn auch geringen, Zweifel zulasst. Zum anderen, dass die Gultigkeit des Cogito-Arguments stark von dem Gottesbeweis abhangig ist. Ziel der hier vorliegenden Arbeit soll es nun sein der Frage nachzugehen, ob das Cogito-Argument auch ohne Gottesbeweis seine Gultigkeit beibehalt. Doch zunachst sollen die fur die spatere Argumentation wichtigen Textstellen gefunden und erlautert werden. Dazu zahlen auch die Grunde und das Anliegen bzw. das Ziel des methodischen Zweifels. Dann wird das Vorgehen das cartesischen Skeptikers anhand der verschieden Stufen, die in den Meditationen beschrieben werden, angefuhrt und der Ausweg aus dem universalen Zweifel (Cogito-Argument) aufgezeigt. In einem zweiten Schritt soll dann, insbesondere mit der Rekonstruktion des Argumentationsganges von Kemmerling, nachvollzogen werden, in welcher Hinsicht das Cogito-Argument noch bezweifelt werden kann und was man gegen diesen Zweifel einwenden kann. Schliesslich soll am Schluss der Arbeit der Versuch einer eigenen Argumentation unternommen werden, der sich auf die oben aufgestellte Fragestellung bezieht."
