Le choix du " lieu " pour aborder la pensée poétique d'Yves Bonnefoy n'est pas ici thématique, mais problématique : c'est la principale entrée, nous semble-t-il, dans une réflexion poétique globale qui fonde à son usage de grands enjeux (platonisme, plotinisme), et les réélabore sous la forme de grands mythes, capables de rendre compte de la dialectique partout à l'œuvre de l'Ici et de l'Ailleurs. Nous proposons l'hypothèse suivante, d'un tournant dans l'œuvre, aux alentours de l'écriture de L'Arrière-pays : au mythe suivi de Rome (mythe du " vrai lieu ", mais toujours déporté dans sa quête d'absolu, et en même temps dénoncé comme l'aliénation - œdipienne - typique, celle qui agit, qui se veut claire : le mythe égyptien, délibérément construit par le poète pour répondre à la nécessité d'arrêter des oscillations, et de fonder la langue et l'existence dans le lieu de l'Ici. Moïse sauvé, c'est alors l'utopie d'un esprit qui, par l'auto-analyse, veut échapper à ses démons et instaurer " l'acte et le lieu " de la parole partagée. Cinq chapitres jalonnent cet itinéraire de pensée. Les quatre premiers témoignent du battement incessant entre les deux termes d'une tension bipolaire : trouver le " centre " - lui échapper (parce que c'est la mort, la plus dangereuse illusion de l'esprit - c'est aussi l'œdipe réalisé) ; d'où ces titres de chapitre I - " Le centre à côté " ; II - " Au carrefour " ; III - " Recentrer " ; IV - " Déception du recentrement ? " Mais c'est le cinquième (" L'Egypte insinuable et la Rome partout ") qui propose la résolution de ces contraires, grâce à la solution " égyptienne ", elle-même dialectique : il suffit que Rome ne soit plus dans Rome, que Rome soit partout, pour que sous le nom de " l'Egypte " (elle-même insituable donc) elle puisse sauver un Moïse qui n'aura plus à s'exiler pour une Terre promise ailleurs. L'essai débouche alors sur une double conclusion ; l'une qui fait aboutir la logique de cette pensée pour laquelle tout lieu, fût-il soumis aux pires menaces qui pèsent aujourd'hui, peut nous être un Nil ; l'autre qui, prenant du recul, réinterroge " l'auto-analyse " ayant abouti à de telles propositions, et pose la question de la part d'Inconscient à l'œuvre dans une telle construction mythique du lieu humain.
