This book is an introduction to the linguistic concepts of argumentation relevant for argument mining, an important research and development activity which can be viewed as a highly complex form of information retrieval, requiring high-level natural language processing technology. While the first four chapters develop the linguistic and conceptual aspects of argument expression, the last four are devoted to their application to argument mining. These chapters investigate the facets of argument annotation, as well as argument mining system architectures and evaluation. How annotations may be used to develop linguistic data and how to train learning algorithms is outlined. A simple implementation is then proposed. The book ends with an analysis of non-verbal argumentative discourse. Argument Mining is an introductory book for engineers or students of linguistics, artificial intelligence and natural language processing. Most, if not all, the concepts of argumentation crucial for argument mining are carefully introduced and illustrated in a simple manner.

Natural language semantics and pragmatics are now two major fields in linguistics, philosophy, artificial intelligence and computational linguistics. With the development of large and efficient Prolog interpreters and compilers and with the expansion of the theoretical aspects of logic programming, the study of natural language semantics and related pragmatic aspects is now becoming a very attractive topic. The proceedings of this workshop reflect these trends. The papers cover almost all the current research fields in natural language, including: morphology, syntax, parser design, generation, feature checking and specification, semantic representations and construction of cooperative responses. Articles on syntax deal with constraints to parsing and generation, rule pruning and comparison of logic-based language systems. The material on the compilers involves functional logic grammars and unification-based grammars. The work on semantics investigates logico-semantic induction, data semantics, comparatives, conceptual graphs, discourse representation, and graphs. Papers on pragmatics discuss disambiguation, cooperation with the user through integrity constraints, and question interpretation through epistemic reasoning. Panel discussions are centered around future directions of research as well as comparisons between different points of view about actual research projects.

Lexical semantics has become a major research area within computational linguistics, drawing from psycholinguistics, knowledge representation, and computer algorithms and architecture. Research programs whose goal is the definition of large lexicons are asking what the appropriate representation structure is for different facets of lexical information. Among these facets, semantic information is probably the most complex and the least explored. Computational Lexical Semantics is one of the first volumes to provide models for the creation of various kinds of computerized lexicons for the automatic treatment of natural language, with applications to machine translation, automatic indexing, and database front-ends, knowledge extraction, among other things. It focuses on semantic issues, as seen by linguists, psychologists, and computer scientists. Besides describing academic research, it also covers ongoing industrial projects.

Computational Lexical Semantics

This is the first book to provide an integrated view of preposition from morphology to reasoning, via syntax and semantics. It offers new insights in applied and formal linguistics, and cognitive science. It underlines the importance of prepositions in a number of computational linguistics applications, such as information retrieval and machine translation. The book presents a wide range of views and applications to various linguistic frameworks.
