Le Volontaire et l'Involontaire constitue le premier tome, publié en 1950, de la trilogie de la Philosophie de la volonté. Deux projets s'y croisent. Le premier est de prendre la mesure de la passivité qui dément la prétention du cogito d'origine cartésienne à se poser souverainement lui-même. Le second est de porter aussi loin que possible la description pure à la façon de l'intuition eidétique de Husserl, des structures du vouloir : projet, imputation, motivation, désir, effort, émotion, habitude. Le premier projet appelle le complément d'une méditation sur la " disproportion " de soi à soi-même, qui définit le statut ontologique de " L'Homme faillible ". Le second rencontre sa limite dans la nécessité de mettre toujours entre parenthèses la condition d'une volonté depuis toujours mauvaise. La parenthèse sera levée dans " La Symbolique du mal " qui marquera le passage d'une phénoménologie pure à une herméneutique.

On a réuni ici dans un seul volume " L'Homme faillible " et " La Symbolique du mal ", qui ensemble formaient sous le titre commun Finitude et Culpabilité le second tome, publié en 1960, de Philosophie de la volonté. Dans le premier ouvrage, on soutient la thèse selon laquelle la fragilité ontologique issue de la " disproportion " de soi à soi-même, illustrée tour à tour dans l'ordre du penser, de l'agir, puis du sentir, n'est pas en soi mauvaise. La finitude n'est pas le mal. Dans le second volume, on s'emploie à montrer que la condition mauvaise de la volonté est d'ordre contingent et historique par rapport à sa constitution essentielle et qu'elle relève d'une herméneutique des symboles et des mythes du mal qui structurent la mémoire de l'homme occidental, juif et grec.

Temps et récit I L'intrigue et le récit historique. Temps et Récit explore après la Métaphore vive, le phénomène central de l'innovation sémantique. Avec la métaphore, celle-ci consistait à produire une nouvelle pertinence de sens par le moyen d'une attribution impertinente. Avec le récit, l'innovation consiste dans l'invention d'une intrigue, des buts, des causes, des hasards, relevant à des titres divers du champ pratique, sont alors rassemblés dans l'unité temporelle d'une action totale et complète. La question philosophique posée par ce travail de composition narrative est celui des rapports entre le temps du récit et celui de la vie et de l'action affective. Plusieurs disciplines sont convoquées à la barre de ce grand débat entre temps et récit, principalement la phénoménologie du temps, l'historiographie et la théorie littéraire du récit de fiction. Temps et Récit I met en place, dans une première partie, la thèse de Paul Ricoeur, qui se précise tout au long des trois tomes, selon laquelle le récit comporte trois rapports " mimétiques " au temps agi et vécu, au temps propre de la mise en intrigue, au temps de la lecture. Dans une deuxième partie, l'ouvrage met ce schéma à l'épreuve sur l'histoire.

This final volume, a comprehensive reexamination and synthesis of the ideas developed in volumes 1 and 2, stands as Ricoeur's most complete and satisfying presentation of his own philosophy. Ricoeur's aim here is to explicate as fully as possible the hypothesis that has governed his inquiry, namely, that the effort of thinking at work in every narrative configuration is completed in a refiguration of temporal experience. To this end, he sets himself the central task of determing how far a poetics of narrative can be said to resolve the "aporias"—the doubtful or problematic elements—of time. Chief among these aporias are the conflicts between the phenomenological sense of time (that experienced or lived by the individual) and the cosmological sense (that described by history and physics) on the one hand and the oneness or unitary nature of time on the other.
