What is the difference between hearing and listening? When do you stop hearing the sound? When does memory begin? Is sound intelligent? Does sound have consciousness? Beginning in the 1960s, musician and composer Pauline Oliveros started experimenting with bringing together meditation, political activism and experimental music, eventually creating Deep Listening - a practice that she said was for humanitarian purposes; specifically healing. Quantum Listening is a manifesto for listening as activism. Quantum listening is listening to listening in order to attune to our bodies, the earth and one another in an increasingly loud and noisy world. Through simple listening exercises and eloquent writing, Oliveros shows how Deep Listening is the foundation for a radically transformed social matrix in which compassion and love are the core motivating principles to guide creative decision-making and our actions in the world.

Pauline Oliveros (1932-2016) Pauline Oliveros' life as a composer, performer and humanitarian was about opening her own and others' sensibilities to the universe and facets of sounds. Her career spanned fifty years of boundary dissolving music making. In the '50s she was part of a circle of iconoclastic composers, artists, poets gathered together in San Francisco. In the 1960's she influenced American music profoundly through her inclusive work with improvisation, meditation, electronic music, myth and ritual. The recipient of four Honorary Doctorates, and, among her many recent awards, the William Schuman Award for Lifetime Achievement, Columbia University, New York, NY; The Giga-Hertz-Award for Lifetime Achievement in Electronic Music from ZKM, Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe, Germany; and The John Cage award from from the Foundation of Contemporary Arts. Oliveros was Distinguished Research Professor of Music at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, and Darius Milhaud Artist-in-Residence at Mills College. She founded 'Deep Listening(R), ' which came from her childhood fascination with sounds and from her works in concert music with composition, improvisation and electro-acoustics. She described Deep Listening as a way of listening in every possible way to everything possible to hear no matter what you are doing. Such intense listening includes the sounds of daily life, of nature, of one's own thoughts as well as musical sounds. 'Deep Listening is my life practice, ' Oliveros explained, simply. Oliveros founded Deep Listening Institute, formerly Pauline Oliveros Foundation, now the Center For Deep Listening at Rensselaer, NY. Her creative work is currently disseminated through Pauline Oliveros Publications and the Ministry of Maåt, Inc (PoPandMoM Productions)

Critical essays and interviews in this volume reveal the significance and intricacies of time and particularly how we experience it. Time is a complex and ambiguous concept. Relativity theorists and quantum mechanics have tinkered with the seemingly unambiguous concept of time since the beginning of the previous century. Art, film, and music make abstract notions of time tangible and comprehensible, and manipulate how we experience it. The ongoing development and implementation of technology constantly challenge, change and undermine our perception of time. This book is, in a sense, a homage to the human experience of time. One half of this anthology consists of articles and essays dealing with conceptions and imaginings of time in the fields of technology, culture and literature. The other half, collects interviews, with composers and performing musicians, concerning their intimate knowledge of working with time.

A pioneer of electronic and interactive electro-acoustic music, of meditative or contemplative music (renowned for her work with The Deep Listening Band), and a virtuoso accordionist and performer, Oliveros stands with John Cage, Terry Riley, Conlon Nancarrow, Morton Feldman, LaMonte Young and few others as among the most radical post-war experimentalists of American music. The compact disc enclosed includes four HorSpiele (1987-1993) commissioned for radio performance in Germany and the US.
